Creativity Challenge #10

Posted on March 10, 2016 by prairiemoonquilts in Creativity Challenges

Well, I have to say that once I got going, I sure went down a lot of rabbit trails with the poetry reading! It’s so easy to really get lost in some of it! My brain is full, or here’s a quote from an Emily Dickinson poem that fits:

“I felt a clearing in my mind
As if my brain had split”

After awhile, I just couldn’t absorb any more . . .

How did you do?

Did you find any of it inspiring?

I re-read some Maya Angelou, and she writes a lot about women, and it sort of fit right in with the International Women’s Day that happened on Tuesday.

I ran across some of my favorites: Longfellow’s “The Wreck of the Hesperus”, Edgar Allen Poe’s “Eldorado”, which I love because it’s quoted in the John Wayne movie of the same name, and Poe’s “The Raven” — what’s not to love about that one?

This all leads into this week’s Creativity Challenge:

Illustrate a passage from a poem

This is a very broad assignment. You can illustrate a line, a partial line, a verse or stanza, or an entire poem — whatever you like and feel like illustrating.

You can also “illustrate” it however you like: paint, pen and ink, stitchery, abstract, mixed media — also whatever you like and feel like doing.

You can illustrate it and include the actual words that inspired you, or you can simply base your illustration on the inspiration and not even include the words. Totally up to you. I’m really interested to see where you take this one, and how everyone interprets it.

I’ve chosen a couple passages that might work for what I want to do. My first one is by Emily Dickinson:

“There is no frigate like a book
To take us lands away”

That just brings to mind all sorts of things for me to illustrate!

Another one I might go with is by William Wordsworth. It’s the tail end of his poem entitled “I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud”:

“And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.”

Maybe because it’s spring and my daffodils are just coming up?

Did you find any passages that stood out for you? Can you think of any you’d like to illustrate? I hope you were at least a little inspired by some of what you read last week, and I can’t wait to see your illustrations!

I’m still chuckling over the Dickinson quote. I so get that! This challenge would be right up my daughter’s alley. Should be fun!

It had been awhile since I’d read poetry. I did enjoy revisiting old friends and meeting a few new ones. My dad wrote poetry so his are old friends. I also enjoy Emily Dickerson. My favorite is “Nobody” I picked up a book at a thrift shop, “When I am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple” There was a poem in there I enjoyed quite a bit. “Like Mother, Like Daughter” by Susan S. Jacobson The last part is
    “I now mother my mother
    when I can no longer
    mother my daughter
    who is older than I
have ever felt myself to be.”

I do love poetry, just don’t spend as much time with it as I’d like, so thanks for pushing us to do this! I guessed what this coming week’s challenge would be and I didn’t cheat by working on it…but I might have been thinking about it. Let’s hope I can pull it together!

  4. Hi Shelly,
Finally got my post up on the challenge. I’ve got random words, doodle, coloring and my poetry posted. Have a great day!
