Brunswick Forest, Block Five

Posted on January 8, 2022 by prairiemoonquilts in Brunswick Forest

This week, if you’re participating, you’re getting Block Five of your Brunswick Forest BOM — and this time, the tree is called Evergreen. This is one of my favorite blocks in the quilt.

I’m sort of trying to decide which one tree I’d like to make an entire quilt of — this one might be it! Not that I’ll ever get around to it, but I’d sure like to!

This one once again has lots of little triangles, but they’re so worth it in the end. I chose all dark greens for my evergreen tree in the fall-colored version:

And lots of golds in the non-traditional:

Yellow was my chosen color this month for my scrappy version:

I like the trunk on this tree — nice and solid, and also, easy to assemble.

I hope you’re having fun with all the blocks.

If you didn’t get in on this at the start, you can still buy the booklet and do a scrappy version. Just give Sew Sweet Quilt Shop a call at 660.548.3056 and they can fix you up! (Ask if they have any leftover kits, and you might be able to get in on the BOM and catch up!)

Since you have so many trees along now, I thought I’d offer a bit of advice on the settings this month.

I tried to write the instructions as clearly as I could, and provided lots of illustrations and diagrams along the way, but here are a few extra tips you might find useful:

  • • For each section, cut the pieces in the order listed. This saves fabric, and helps to keep things in order.
  • • For each portion of each section, lay out all the pieces you need (which are listed in the pattern) as shown in the diagram. This way, you can make sure you have them all, that you have the correct ones, and that they’re all in the right positions. Perhaps this will prevent you having to UN-sew something!
  • • Work on one section at a time, one portion at a time, to keep from getting things mixed up and getting confused. Use checkmarks in your pattern booklet to mark off steps you’ve completed as you complete them. Then when you have to step away and come back, you know right where you left off.
  • • Pay special attention to your 1/4″ seams. If you think you’re having trouble with your 1/4″ seams, here’s an article on how to test it: Testing Your 1/4″ Seam
  • • If you are using the Maple Leaf blocks in your setting, whenever you match pieces and portions up for stitching, sew with the Maple Leaf block on top as much as possible. This allows you to see the points of the leaves and sew the pieces together without chopping off the points of the leaves.

I hope these tips help you as you’re setting your quilt together. Happy Stitching!
