Well, that went fast!
School is back in session, and fall will be here before we can blink!
We still have a few more things to move out of the old house. In spite of an unusually cool August, we had some super hot days and some rainy days, and some days I simply didn’t feel like running up and down the stairs 20 times, so I spent more time at my machine. I’m still trying to find homes for all the things I’ve moved over from the old house, which is proving to be a trick. I guess I haven’t downsized as much as I still need to yet!
But I’m feeling more comfortable in the new studio every day, and things are slowly coming together. I managed to make 82 blocks in August!
As usual, some I can’t show you just yet; but I did finish one more block for my Improv Herringbone quilt:

I also got the Sweet Kisses top put together and off my design wall, so that made room for this scrap quilt that I really need to get finished. When you need a quick scrap quilt, start with your orphan blocks! I need a rustic-looking farm-themed quilt for a gift, so I had My Cowboy sort through my orphan blocks and pull out the ones he liked, and I have a quick start! I’ll be keeping you posted on this one as I go — follow me over on Instagram to watch my progress — and I’ll certainly post more of it on here, too, as I get time.

I’m also nearing the end of my Blast from the Past blocks, and from the very start, I felt like I needed to remake my Block 3 — I just didn’t like the first one I made. I also needed a block for a guild project, so I whipped up two of these:

Back in July, we had an “Ugly Fat Quarter” exchange at guild, and that purple print was what I got! I didn’t think it was ugly at all! Now my original Block 3 will go in the orphan pile, and I’m much happier with this new one for my Blast from the Past quilt. Now to finish the last few blocks so I can get started on the filler. I’m anxious to get that one finished! I used the extra block for the guild project.
I finished another block for the Made & Found QAL — I’m seriously behind, but I don’t seem to have a photo of it, and evidently, I put it “somewhere safe” because I can’t find it this morning!
I also made more tiny HST blocks, finished all the blocks for a quilt I’m excited to show you soon, made a few more simple 9-patches, and 29 blocks for a couple different veteran’s quilts I need to get done before Veteran’s Day. Whew! More sewing than I thought I got done!
So . . . how did YOU do?
It’s time to report in with your August totals. I have the Project Page updated as of this morning. (As usual, check your totals to see if I’ve missed anything — I certainly don’t want to cheat anyone out of any blocks!)
Our block goal for September is 40 blocks, for a year-so-far total of 276. We can do 40, right?
The prize winner for July is Paula Mo.!
And just like that, August is over, and we’re flying into September! Have a wonderful stitchy month!
I love your improve herringbone. I think it’s in my future. Your other blocks are great as well.
I had a good month. We had about 2 maybe 3 weeks of mostly triple digits temperatures. I stayed inside sorted through more “stuff” and sewed. I finished my 5 at the Hive top- 19 blocks; found 2 more placemat blocks that weren’t counted last month-2. (All 6 are even quilted now!) And made blocks for Mirage- 64. ( free pattern from Jordan fabrics). grand total for the month. 85!
I surprised myself and did 47 blocks! That probably is the most I’ve done ever.
Did a lot of sewing this month, because it has been too hot in TN to be outside. Over 100 degrees more days that I want to think about.
Had 189 blocks because I’m sewing ahead on SALs because I’m traveling in September. 9 patch leader and enders blocks really jumped up the total,
And I made a baby quilt.
So glad you getting settled in to you new space.
Yeah, August was a bit of a blur! You did well, though! I love that purple fabric, and improv herringbone??!! How cool is that?! Might have to put that on my list of fun stuff to try. I don’t know what I’m up to in my quilt room lately, but it clearly isn’t making a lot of blocks! Just 27 for me.
This was my month to quilt. I made 359 easy blocks and pieced 3 small quilt tops. I also quilted and bound 1 small quilt. Wishing you good energy to finish the move into the new house before the winter arrives.
I’m awed that you get as much done in your quilt room as you do with all you have going on.
Well, I did better in August . I ‘m working on a scrap quilt….I think it’s called Arkansas Crossroads…..fun block to make but it takes a little bit to put the block together because I’m using 1 1/2″ scraps. So my total this month is 25.
Well it’s a landmark day for me. I just finished a Quilt of Valor. It’s made from a panel and blocks that were donated to the guild from someone’s legacy. It doesn’t sound like much but it’s the first thing I have sewn in nine months. An accident that changed my life at the end of January, I didn’t believe that I would ever make another quilt. Have immense gratitude for those who believed when I couldn’t.
yay quilting is my favorite therapy
I really Like how the rectangles in your improv herringbone quilt are a variety of widths. It’s gonna be a beaut!
I did manage (so delighted) to do a quilt project after months off with the broken hip. I took a quilt to a new quilt place down here in Warsaw. Picked it up!! Cut the binding, sewed that on and hand stitched it down. Why all those details? Because apparently my broken hip broke something in my brain!!! Old age needs absolutely no health problems!!! The quilt finished is called Ribbon Box. A great idea to use up some large leftovers!!!
So hope the remainder of your move goes well. By the way, I love your Ugly FatQuarter block. The fabric you used with the fat quarter made the block beautiful.
August was a much better month for me. I made 182 blocks which included two appliqué blocks.
I made 183 small blocks this month. That brings me to a YTD total of 612.
It’s been really hot here on the KS/MO border, and I’m hoping for much cooler temps with lower humidity soon.
I went through my orphan blocks and leftover triangles which helped me make 243 blocks this month for placemats for meals on wheels. I had time to get a few baby quilts sewn together as well. I am ready for some cooler fall weather🍁
None for me, as I am still traveling. However, I did buy a panel and planning a wall hanging out of it for the trailer. I am hoping to get it started here in September, even though we are out camping. Excited to finish it. I will be able to count as one block when it is finished. I will also be hand quilting most of it.
Love your work. Thanks for keeping me motivated even when I can’t get a lot done.
28 QAYG string blocks and 32 Wonky 9 patches for a total of 60 blocks.
Love that Herringbone!
It has been a crazy month, 12 blocks done. Not many but I did get some done. September should be better.
89 this month. 8 maple leaf, 2 birthday blocks, 16 star of wonder, 5 simply star pillow, 45 peach preserves, 2 squishy bag, and 11 animal zoo baby quilt. Thanks again Shelly for all your work with this project
I’m checking in with having made 54 blocks for August. Thanks for your commitment to keep us inspired.
I got some borders done on a panel quilt – want to add a few more borders so guess 1/2 block. Hope more sewing time in Sept.
I am hoping this will be my last month of single digit blocks. I had 2. I did sew 12 seams that will eventually be 2 blocks, maybe next month! Found another kit, that makes 63 , well 62 minus the one I am not counting!
276? I have a lot of catching up to do! It is funny how one person’s ugly is another person’s beauty…
Your blocks are so pretty!! I actually got 15 blocks done this month which is my best month yet! I have been working on getting blocks sewn into tops so I can get them finished. In the total is a couple of embroidery blocks that just needed a little bit to finish each. 1 block simply needed 2 French Knots for the eyes of the cow. Why I didn’t finish it before now I don’t know.
I finished 5 blocks this month. This summer has flown by. Maybe a I will be a bit more productive this winter.
It was a big month for me with 141 blocks made, most of them little 3″ improv blocks for one quilt.
I managed to get 15 blocks done (all for my Michigan Shop Hop quilt)
So glad to hear that you are getting settled in, that’s always such a wonderful feeling! I’m still plodding along here. The first half of the month was consumed with getting my older son packed and moved in to his college dorm. I have a long term applique project that is taking up quite a bit of time as well. However, I was able to sew 11 blocks this month, and hope for better numbers in September!
Eight blocks. Yep….I knew August would be rough for sewing time this year. But, there are times and seasons in our life. Here’s to September!
Whoops! Miscount. My actual total is 11. A bit better…
46 blocks completed, no quilts finished this month. Entered two quilts in the state fair and won a blue ribbon on one! I like the blocks your Cowboy picked out. Hope to see the finished top/quilt in the future–FUN! Thanks for keeping us motivated.
I made 54 blocks and finished off 3 quilts.
Now I’m going through scraps and cutting them down. Before I’m done I will have handled all of my fabrics as I’m planning on reorganizing everything. I doubt I’ll get much sewing done this month, but we’ll see. Certainly don’t want to take a detour as I’ll not finish what I need to do.
I bet you’re looking forward to a more comfortable winter in your new home.
Prepping for knee replacement surgery, surgery, and recovery didn’t do much for quilty activities. I did manage 40 blocks after assigning myself “occupational therapy” at the sewing machine. For the couple of years I was afterschool “daycare” for my grandson, one of his favorite activities after finishing his homework was going through my orphan blocks for the our mutually-selected, use ’em up project (e.g., placemats, dolly quilt) and, then, selecting fabric for background, sashing, etc. Hadn’t thought about that in years until I read your comment about Your Cowboy going through yours.
00 blocks
I’m glad you’re getting settled into your new digs. I wish I could visit to see everything. I’ve been working on finally getting my sewing room the way I want it and I’ve been here for over a year. There are just too many projects and quilts to keep me from organizing. I made 37 blocks in August – the last 30 blocks for my virtual group’s Tula Pink quilt-along, 2 project bags made at a guild workshop, and the first 5 offset log cabin blocks for the panel quilt (a rusty red tractor and barn panel) I’ve started for my brother-in-law. I have a few Christmas projects I want to start, so I hope to get going on them soon.
76 blocks in August for me.
I did a grand total of 13! But I now have a border along one side of a quilt. Working my way around.
I sewed 48 blocks in August. Nine were for charity quilts (1 a hand-pieced Grandmother’s Flower Garden) and 39 small 4-patch leader/ender blocks. I also long-arm quilted 2 twin quilts and bound 4 twin and 2 baby quilts. Love your herringbone blocks and the start of the cowboy quilt.
Just 12 blocks for me this month. I’m still working on the Sue Pelland quilt I rashly agreed to custom quilt for a fellow guild member. Next month will be better…
32 for me…. I’m still embroidering and appliquing so slow.
And I’m working on my autobiography again….takes time as it’s stories, not genealogy! I’m doing it for my brother’s kids as he died too early.
The month started off great then life got in the way. I managed to complete 24 blocks.
I just love everything you show in your posts. The Herringbone block is so cute. My count for the month is 100. All the blocks were for charity quilts. I have a goal of making 24 XL Twin (60″ x 90″) for Charity by June, 2025. These quilts will be donated to the Seita program at the local college. The Seita program is for kids that have aged out of the foster program, going to college. Thanks for all the work you put into this project.
140 Blocks for me. I’m sooo happy it’s September but where did August go!? Oh my!
I love the variety of blocks you make, and your creativity and positivity. I tried to do something sewing related every day. Yesterday I started putting the blocks I’ve been working on all year together, and the top is 1/4 done – a great feeling. I also spent a little time each day hand sewing binding onto a large quilt, a step which intimidated me for about a year, and now it’s almost finished, too. Here, besides being hot, we have had many unhealthy days due to smoke. My total for August is 50 blocks.
I had a busy August completing 390 blocks
I put together three quilt tops from the blocks made previously, so not as much time on new blocks. Thank goodness for a little quilt retreat to get 48 blocks made.
I did much better in August than I thought…162 blocks! Put 2 quilt tops together and a wall hanging. I’ve got to get some longarming done! At least summer is coming to an end😢, but the good thing is that I won’t be sharing my energy with outside projects.
I really like your herringbone! You are always so inspiring.
21 blocks for me. More quilting and other sewing being done.
I got to go on a retreat last week, and surprised myself with my total – 97! Not all were made while I was there, but three non-stop days of sewing really helped.
I love your improv herringbone.
Just 37 blocks for me. I was busy quilting rather than piecing this month. Can’t wait to see the tops you’ve been working on!
I managed 30 blocks and started quilting a baby quilt for an animal rescue online auction. For some reason I didn’t receive your email and just went to your web site.
47 blocks

Definitely exhausted and I didn’t have to move!
Finally took time to count the August blocks. I made 31 light and dark pink blocks and 5 girl ghost blocks for a total of 36.

Late for the party again. I agree that the ugly FQ wasn’t that ugly. I managed to complete a quilt top while on a 50 day road trip. It was laser cut and had 80 blocks. We should be home in a few days. Then, let the stitching begin!!!
another month, another big fat zero blocks for me. my daugjter got married, out of Province was an exciting and happy time. I did do some sewing but mostly clothing for the grands, including their dresses for the wedding. I really like your improv herringbone . Here is to hoping I have something to report in September!
Well where did the first week of September go?
46 blocks…. 4 finishes back to free motioning the donation quilts…. Pumpkin season has started in Maine
Sorry I am late in reporting my block count. I completed 94 blocks for August.
Aack! I don’t think I posted how many blocks I made during August. I made 72 blocks, hooray! I’ve made some progress on several different projects and I made a stack of blocks for a charity quilt for my quilt guild. Better late than never to post! 😂
No blocks in August. Hoping to sew more soon.
