April Studio Organizing, Task One

Posted on April 11, 2023 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

Hey, there! How’s your main work surface looking?

I’ve been trying to clean mine off by working through the piles, and that makes for really slow going! But I did finish two quilt tops last week, so I got to put away a lot of leftovers, and got rid of a few piles Here’s what it looks like as of this morning:

Better, but still too many teetering piles! I’ll keep working through those, but in the meantime, it’s time for another challenge. And I know just what needs to happen around here, so I’ll drag you all with me once again:

Clean up your sewing machine and its area

I need to clean my machine, oil it, change the needle, and then clean up the table and the area around it. (More of the craftermath of finishing two quilt tops!) And I think we all need this little reminder now and then.

If you’re already on top of it, then you’re home free! You’ll have extra sewing time!

Can you believe it’s already nearly mid-April? Happy Spring Stitching! If you need me, I’ll be outside. The sun is finally shining, and it’s to be in the 70s today. The sewing machine can wait a bit — I have some goats to pet!

PS: It was Ranger’s 6th birthday last Saturday. I gave him a tortilla for a birthday treat, and he got a brand new hay bale, so he was a happy boy. I love him so much!

I always clean and oil my machine after every five bobbins. I just finished the fourth bobbin this afternoon, so my machine is almost due for a cleaning. My cutting table is still a disaster, but I did finish one quilt top last week and have almost finished a second one. Finishing tops sure helps clean off the cutting table.

Ranger is as cute as ever! Your cutting surface is looking pretty good!!!! I do need to clean my sewing machine table – as I was quilting a small baby quilt and a pile got moved the dust bunnies came out to play.
I will get on top of that this weekend.

Since I’m moving to a new apartment, my sewing room will be clean, at first, anyway. I plan on taking a picture so I can keep reliving that “Aw, great!” feeling. I do plan on making a design wall, which I am very excited about. Hopefully, the sorting of my stash will stay done for a while to come!

You’ve made progress! My work surfaces are clear at the moment as I’ve packed everything up to go to retreat tomorrow. I’m sure I’ll make a mess of it on return😂 Bringing lots of blocks to put together…if I’m successful those will move on to the longarm que and outta the sewing room.

I actually clean and oil machine after almost every bobbin. I’m always amazed at how much lint gets in there. Getting brave and planning on teaching a Hunters Star block. Trying to get my ducks in a row for that.

Yes, Spring–I want to pet Ranger too–lots of wet, heavy snow, so I’m picking up branches instead!
This new challenge is something I have been working on for a while–making progress slowly–as it involves getting quilting projects stored there further along and finding a better home for them. But having them in the sewing area until that happens works!
Good reminded to clean machines as well–so important when using relics/antiques to sew on like I do!

I’ve not been getting any notifications – just going through old emails and saw a clean up episode from March 2020! So re-registered. Happy to say I’ve still been sorting and tidying. Scraps are now dealt with and organised. My mum gave me some Ferrero Roche choc boxes which are ideal for squares from 1.5″ to 2.5″ – I still have bags in their own sections, any new cuts will be in the little boxes. Also taming strings – not so fond of those, so been trimming and squaring them to 3.5″ squares. Once I have made a quilt from those I’m not collecting more – they will go in a bag for pet bedding! Two tops quilted and waiting to be bound. Getting there!
Ranger is a lovely fellow – sooooo floofy!
Now going to catch up on what I’ve missed! xx

My sewing area is usually in pretty good shape. I have 2 machines at right angles of each other. The area between them does tend to collect gadgets and spools of thread with their coordinating bobbins. As for cleaning and oiling my machine? That does need to be completed. Thanks for the reminder.

Yes, i need to clean & oil my machine. Not too bad in the table – only the quilt (old UFO) i’m working on, have a hand project that will also be done soon. Yay. Thinking of my next projects want to work on – pincushion for next month & finish off another UFO.

The prefect project for this afternoon. I NEED to get two quilt sandwiches made and can only do that on a clean table. The mess is a result of cutting several bags, those are done and time to face the “I don’t want to but have to” sandwich time!

My sewing table always accumulates piles (often stuff that doesn’t have a home. I need to do that, and shoo out the dust bunnies before they grow up to be full-grown rabbits! Thanks for the encouragement.

We had a sunny day here, but still quite brisk, with frost on the roofs this morning. Your lil goat is too cute!

My sewing table and machine are both clean and ready for action. Just the way I like it.
Guess I should probably make some blocks for April.

since I fell on the 4th, haven’t been able to sew
So it will be zero blocks this month. G
Fortunately, my cutting table was cleaned off for some quilting time that has been delayed also
Your two quilt top finishes is great
