2024 Final Countdown, Task Three

Posted on December 31, 2024 by prairiemoonquilts in The Final Countdown

Well! Task Three already?! Did you make some good progress with the first two tasks? I did, and I’m hoping to give you a “new studio tour” shortly after the first of the year. Several of you have been asking, but I obviously haven’t been ready for that!

But here we are at the last task for this year’s Final Countdown . . .

I usually try to make the final task something a bit more fun, and also thought-provoking, such as making a list, or taking an inventory of your UFOs, and while you’re certainly welcome to do those things, too, I want us all to:

If you really don’t want to start anything completely new right now, then pull out an older project that you still love and treat it like a new one!

I have to spend some time thinking this one over my ownself, so I’ll let you know what I come up with after I’ve decided, but I’m all inspired after creating THIS quilt to dig out one of my vintage DWR projects and get going on it. It’ll be like something new for me, but will actually help finish up something that’s already started. The trick will be finding it in this mess!

But I have until the 6th to keep making progress, so I’ll forge ahead for the next week.

How about you?

Are you itching to start something new?

Is there a special pattern or bundle of fabric calling your name?

Or do you have projects so old (like I do) that simply pulling one of those out will seem like a new project? Haha!

Have fun with this one! It could end up being your first finish of 2025!

Thanks so much for playing along in The Final Countdown again this year. I will be continuing the Studio Organizing Challenges throughout the year — planning to do more challenges than I was able to in 2024, mainly because I seriously need to get this place whipped into shape.

Remember, I’ll post the wrap-up and the prize winners on the 7th, so keep chipping away at the tasks and don’t forget to leave your comments. Happy organizing!

As per my 350 blocks report, I’ve got this one covered.

  2. Sandy Hughes says:

I have many UFOs to pick from. I love making quilt tops but have a hard time quilting them. So I’ll be picking one of my UFOs to finish. In fact my resolution for 2025 is to finish all my UFOs!

I have started something new today. I think most of my projects are done that I am aware of but I am sure I will find something that needs finished lol. so I cut and have been sewing on a log cabin that I want to give my sister for her wedding gift or shower. so I will have my final vlock count tomorrow as I am headed back to the studio after I eat to sew for a few more hours.

happy quilting everyone and Happy New Year

Thank you . I have been waffling about wanting something new.. I plan to make exploding blocks..lots.

I made some new design boards today, trying to get ready for a demo I have to do for our guild in April. I also started a new leader/ender. Happy New Year.

  6. Cindy Wienstroer says:

Start something new? Well maybe I can pull out some ‘kits’ and decide. Or maybe finish some table toppers? Um – should do something.

  7. Cathy Poyner says:

I didn’t look at your blog until today. I straightened around my sewing machine, picked up a pile of batting/trimmings from Christmas projects and put away. I also dusted and vacuumed around my machine. Then, I started a puzzle. I think I did all the tasks.

Still working on these! I’m embarrassed by how little time it’s taken for me to tidy most of my sewing room. I did start a new project on Saturday, so I’m counting that one as a new project. It’s fabric and a pattern that I purchased a year ago. I have almost half of the blocks sewn so far. Tomorrow is another day!

I am choosing a ufo for my new project. I want to work on my pile of tops and get them quilted. Some are so old that it will feel like a new project to me.

I recently purchased the template and a bundle of fabric for fussy cutting to make the Jane Austin Coverlet. 2025 is the 250th year since she was born. Will also spend time reading some of her books while making this. I have held off starting anything new for months–this will be the one I choose.

I have several UFOs that could use some attention. I have two that are rather close to quilt top completion. But I started a new project today. My quilt guild is having a mystery quilt project this year. I pulled the fabrics from my stash, yay! I have the first month instructions and completed all the fabric cutting that’s listed. I even used a NEW cutting blade to get the New Year off to a good start. 😊

  12. Kristi says:

Oh this is the best! Cutting out stars right now!

  13. Kelly Powers says:

I have Task #3 finished already. I pulled fabric for a mystery quilt that I had told myself I wasn’t going to start because I had too many UFOs already.
I started pulling fabrics last year for a Jane Austin top. I will probably pull that back out soon to start cutting on. So, 2 new projects to start the new year.
I got a ruler handle for Christmas, so I may brave a new blade on my rotary cutter soon. 😉
Still working on Task #2. The floor of my studio is deep down. I may make it before Jan. 6. My daughter would like to sew before school starts back up again and the floor must be found for her to get to her machine.

  14. Beverly says:

I’m going to do some quilts of valor blocks for our quild and finish a Linus blanket! Both new and old to finish..

  15. barb Czarniecki says:

I finished Task #2, and now have many UFO’s to choose from. Maybe I’ll close my eyes and just pick one. Thanks for your inspiration.

  16. Amanda says:

This is the one that I am struggling with as I have plenty of UFO’s that need my attention. With that stated, I’m so full of indecision about what new project I want to start. I saw a post in a Facebook group of a Bow Tie quilt that is a freebie from Bonnie Hunter from several years ago called Cheddar something. I forgot the actual name and my pattern isn’t in front of me. Wish me luck with my indecision!

  17. Stephanie says:

I already just started something new (oops). Hidden Log Cabin from the Moonkin utube channel. I was enjoying sewing it so much it is already a quilt top.
Think pulling out an older UFO is a good idea for the next thing.

  18. Debbi says:

I know just what I’m going to start! I’ve had the Anthology quilt book for many years and have wanted to make one of the quilts. This year I decided I could do it as a block of the month. I will use stash so I need nothing to get started. A good project for my Saturday sewing on zoom.

  19. Paula Mu says:

Thank you for this fun task. I actually continued working on the Laundry Basket Quilts Birthday Blocks. The setting info was out so I am continuing with them. Thanks for this fun end of the year 3 part challenge, Shelly.

  20. Cindy Wienstroer says:

I got the 2nd task done on the 3rd but did start the 3rd task before – now it get it done! Thanks for helping us get organized and progressing. I appreciate what you are doing for us.

  21. Jocelyn says:

I have decided to start on the pattern Simplish. I’ve been wanting to make it for a while. Using 5″x10″ strips. I have a bundle all ready, so it looks like a go. So This will be my third task to complete.

  22. Karen says:

This is a good task, as I’m often reluctant to start a new project, since I already have so many UFO’s. But I got a fun panel and pattern for Christmas, so I worked on that.
Thank you, once again, for hosting this fun challenge to get us all ready for the New Year, and hopefully lots of wonderful sewing time for each of us.

  23. Diana S says:

My final countdown task was dig out fabrics for more dog bandanas. The groomers requested some more in the different sizes. Needed to work on those for now.
