Time for the final task already! My, how the time does fly.
Our final task is usually one that is a bit easier and helps us get a good handle on the upcoming year’s projects, so in keeping with that tradition, this final task is:
If you don’t have your projects listed, maybe it’s time to make a list.
If you have some of them listed, but there are others hiding in your space that haven’t made it to the list yet, maybe it’s time to add them.
If you simply need to go over your list, make sure the ones you have listed all still need to be there; or if you can check some off, maybe it’s time for that little exercise.
Once you have a list, try to come up with a plan for handling all those projects. I can attest: the list AND the plan WILL change (maybe a lot) over the course of the year, but just roll with it — it’s normal and perfectly OK.
I need to go over mine, and evidently become more reasonable with myself!
I usually make a yearly plan, and by summer, that plan seems ridiculous. So even tho I may make a tentative plan for 2023, my intention this year is to mostly make a monthly plan, and revise my yearly plan each month so that it makes sense for me the entire year. (Just another thing I’ve learned about myself over the years of doing this.)
It’s good to know what you have on your plate going forward. It’s also good to look back at what you got done in the last year. It’s good to take stock of what you have going on. Maybe you don’t want to finish some of those projects. Maybe the deadlines have changed according to what’s going on in your life. Maybe something new has come up and you need to add in a new project.
Here’s a couple links that might help you with your list:
A 2023ProjectList — I make one of these every year, even tho it evolves as the year goes by.
All People Quilt’s 2023 UFO Challenge
Have fun with this. Use it for making yourself feel better about going into the new year with a solid plan. Use it to dream up all the new stuff you want to do in the upcoming year. Use it to keep from forgetting what you have going on. Use it so you will know what you need to be working on (especially projects with deadlines). Use it to keep track of what you’ve finished, so you’ll know what you accomplished all year!
Here’s to a wonderful 2023 for all of us!
Remember, you have till the 9th to leave your comments on The Final Countdown posts. I’ll draw for the prize winners on the 9th. Thanks so much for playing along!
I feel like I’m ahead of the game on this one. I have joined Quilting Gail’s PHD challenge, so I already have my list completed.
Since my WIP/Quilt Top list is up to date, 12 picked for the guild UFO challenge and several with ‘deadlines’, I’m going to use this opportunity to update my PIGs as that number exploded this past year and I didn’t keep my list up to date. I suspect that number will freak me out much as my original UFO # did back in 2008.

I just did this yesterday–I am going to try to finish more quilts this year–my number of tops just keeps growing! I think I am up to 17 tops waiting for quilting. I guess I like piecing more than quilting. Some are just too big to quilt on my little machine–I took a longarm class in the fall and now I need to improve my skills and tackle the larger quilts.
I had so many UFOs (still do) that it was a challenge for me this year to work on one every month. Twelve tops were taken to my quilter. Three were completed and gifted along with 5 tops donated. I still have about 30 projects to work on and, hopefully 2023 will be as productive and 2022. Whew! Sure glad I have these things documented. Now to decide what will be worked on. lol Good luck everyone.
I have already made the starting list for 2023. Some are finished and waiting for quilting. 9 to be professionally quilted. 2 to be quilted myself. And there are 4 quilts that are in progress. That makes a total of 15. I bet anything I will start something else as soon as I get physical go-ahead. And remember quilting keeps us off the street corners and out of the bars. See how morality reigns with quilters!
So far, my quilt priority list is:
– IK baby quilt
– L baby quilt
– hand-quilted Escher quilt for dad
– hand-quilted bed quilt for me
– t-shirt quilts
I’m sure more things will come up in there, possibly more people having babies or doing bigger sized quilts for my kids/my niblings, but those will get added to the list when they happen. I have little time with 3 kids 6 and under, so I’m keeping my list short.
okay will do.
1 free motion wall quilt
2 clean behind the design walls ( done)
3. make project list
I don’t understand some of the acronyms but I know what WIP’s are, and I never actually wrote them down but going to do it this time! Thank you so much and yes keeps us off the street!
Such a great idea to make a list. I have found more half finished projects as I have been decluttering. I also have bags of fabric that I put together for quilt ideas to make, will need to decide if I want to follow thru with the idea or return the fabrics to stash. I am learning that notes help me tremendously as I think that I will remember what my intentions were….but I am often trying to decode my own ideas!
I have Task 1 done. Finished a binding and label on my last UFO quilt for 2022.
Have printed two APQ lists one for finishing tops and the 2nd for quilting. I still have 1 quilt to bind to start new year.
Will start Task 2 tomorrow.
I have a notebook where I list each month quilt related projects I work on. I have also used the UFO Challenge chart in the past. Both are helpful in providing insight into what needs work & keep me from starting new projects.
I printed a copy of the 2023 project list and will fill a new one in each month with the goal of listing all the projects I have in process. It’s definitely more than 12, but a place to start!!!
Have a Happy New Year & thanks for keeping us motivated.
I spent this morning updating my UFO list. Kinda sad that when I started this year’s I wrote that I never touched the first 23 on last year’s list. I think I completely finished 4 off of last year’s list. This year has several new ones. I did quilt and finish 21 tops from a friend for charity in 2022! Here’s to getting some of those older ones done and finishing what I start on the new ones!
I completed this earlier today. Instead of shrinking, my UFO count increased. I also do the All People Quilt UFO Challenge; here’s hoping I make progress this year!
I carry two UFOs into 2023–Halfway Quilt (2021 UFO) and Mini Jewel Solids (my current leader/ender). I have also made a list of quilts planned for 2023. There are 18 quilts on the list so far. We’ll see how it grows!
1. I did a fast ufo finish on day 1.
Thanks for the motivation!
2. Will put away a big pile of fabric used for quilts or acquired.
3. I am working on my UFO list and making plans to finish.
Picked the quilt to bind. Binding ready to fold and sew on the front of the quilt.
Papers to be sorted are at my elbow right now.
I usually only want the projects listed that I intend to do this year. Need to do that. It will be longer than I get done as I usually add too many new projects as the year progresses.
My big for the year is to shop from my stash
Bravo Shelly on the blocks finished
Guess I am in good company. No last minute projects to finish on day 1, on day 2 sorted my 2 drawers & 2 boxes for projects and made list. Day 3 was to make list and plans – started the list and really excited! Thanks for encouraging us to work toward progress – even when plans change. You inspire us so start the new year with our gratitude.
I have my 2023 quilt planner filled out. I
made a list of quilts I want to make for me. I have my monthly goals listed for all the donations I will make. My goal is to quilt at least 3 of the quilt tops from the large stack. It’s going to be a challenge since I am back to working full time. 🤞🤞🤞Task 3 completed. Best wishes for a wonderful New Year!🎉
I made a list of my UFO’s – 19. I started last year with 15 and finished 14 of them, but started 48 things and finished 32 of them, so that leaves me with 19. Only one of them is older than a year – it’s SO old I don’t even remember, but maybe this is the year it will be a finish!
This exercise was very eye opening for me! I have project boxes with UFO projects in them and that part was easy, as my guild does a UFO challenge every year. But…I then counted the jelly rolls, layer cakes, charm squares and fat quarter bundles and almost fainted. I’ll have to live to 100 to complete all those quilts. Someone needs to rein me in.
This is my favourite NYE ritual. While waiting up for the fireworks to start, I take a brand new notebook and rearrange my UFO/WIP list, adding the new starts from the current year that have to carry over, ready for a fresh start on Jan 1. This year my list has a total of 66. This is always a fluid total, as some listings become more than one quilt, sometimes a couple get combined into one.
Even though I start plenty of new things, my list numbers are gradually declining, down from 148 just a few years ago. Happy dance!
Have tasks 2&3 finished. Piles of papers on a 2’x4’ table to the left end of my sewing desk had to be sorted, filed & trashed before I could start task one. The task list for 2023 is complete. 23 projects to finish & start to finish for ‘23. Working on binding a quilt that was waiting for binding
Another year on the UFO Challenge. I have 12 tops that need to be quilted, bound, and labeled. Those are my list for the year. I have very few UFO’s in the cut-but-not-pieced category. I have been working hard over the years to: #1 not create any more (e.g., finish through label anything new I start) UFO’s and #2 pick one UFO to make progress on before I start a new project.
I did this one! I made three lists of 12. I’m part of a game where they randomly draw a number 1-12 each month. My intent is quilt two, one from two different lists, and finish piecing one.
I have my list compiled and ready to go.
What I’d like to do this years is what Pam Avara (http://pamela.avaraarts.com) does–she puts all of the pictures of her UFO’s on one page, along with the list. I love the visual reminder!!
Thank you for the project list. I made up a list of those things that are really close to being completed, and will start with those first. All the lap quilts you made this year, are so inspiring and I’d love to do even half that! Thanks for all the encouragement and motivation you provide us all year long! Hope it’s a wonderful, productive year for us all!
I updated the spreadsheet that I started last year and was pleasantly surprised by how many finishes I did have for the year. Added a few more to the list of UFO’s. It’s quite an eye opening experience! I knew I had a lot of project boxes but when it’s there in black and white and not hiding behind cupboard doors….wowza!
My squirrel brain just keeps thinking of more things I want to start. It’s pretty overwhelming. I’m trying to decide what approach I’m going to use this year. I’m definitely going to try and get the projects that are nearly finished out front and center to work on and some I’m going to reimagine…one project that was to be a throw quilt is going to become pillows and table topper for my sister…probably about the same amount of work but that fills a need and gives me motivation . There are of course those projects I have to give serious thought about if I need or want to finish them at all, I’m going to let those thoughts marinate for a bit.
My house is pulling me to do another major declutter and my sewing mojo feels like it’s waning right now. It just seems like time is moving so fast and I’m a turtle😊.
I love reading how other folks approach their project lists! I, on the other hand, get lost in my list making and tend to go down every available rabbit trail 😜. I’ve finally figured out what works for me. I have a “top drawer “ system. The projects I want to do first are placed in the top drawer of my stack of plastic drawers. After my sorting in task #2, I ended up with 5 or 6 projects in the “top drawer “. As I finish some of these, others will make their way into the queue. Unorthodox I know, but it works for me. Happy quilting!!!
I really liked this task. A few years I compiled a UFO list which I found very helpful to use as a reference when selecting a UFO to work on. I reworked that list (I had completed many on the list) and organized things a bit differently. I put all items needing quilting on a list, UFOs in another list, and kits on a separate list. I won’t share how many I have but I used lots of pages in a notebook! Thanks for the push to remake this list in a more functional way.
I’ve recapped all of my challenges on today’s blog post. Some were more successful than other, but there was progress on everything.
