2021 Final Countdown, Task Two

Posted on December 30, 2021 by prairiemoonquilts in The Final Countdown

We’re off to a great start! Some of you have your paper under control, and the rest of you seem to have a plan, so I can hear lots of progress being made! I’m off to a slow start, but I’ll pick up the pace here soon.

Meanwhile, it’s time for Task Two — are you ready??

Here we go . . .

Pick 3 easy tasks that need doing

This one may make you think a bit. And it’s a bit tricky, cos it’s like doing three tasks in one. But . . . these three tasks should not be gargantuan projects — just little tasks you’ve been putting off, but once done, will make a big difference in the start of your new year and the feeling in your sewing space.

Here are some suggestions:

  • • Put the binding on a quilt
  • • Prep a backing and binding for a quilt top you have ready to quilt
  • • Add a label to a quilt that needs it
  • • Clean up a (small) pile that’s bothering you
  • • Back up your computer files, or
  • • Organize your files for easier access
  • • Clean out a drawer
  • • Clean off a shelf
  • • Clean up after a recent finish

Don’t pick any large project that will take days to accomplish. Just choose three easy tasks that you can do fairly quickly to get that feeling of accomplishment. Maybe it will make such a difference you’ll be motivated to tackle even more organizing tasks whenever you get the time. Or maybe it’ll just make your sewing space feel so much better, you’ll be way more productive on those projects!

Got a quilt top that only needs borders to be done?

An old UFO you can’t decide what to do with?

A pile you keep tripping over or relocating just so you can work?

Some things to put away/give away/throw away to get them out of your space?

Need to decide on a good way to organize your rulers?

Need to clean off your bulletin board or change your calendars?

Is it time to clean and oil your sewing machine, or clean your iron?

Sweep up all the dust bunnies off the floor?

Change your rotary cutter blade(s)?

You know the possibilities are endless here . . .

Now is the time!

Think it over. And as My Cowboy says: “In the immortal words of yer boyfriend, ‘Git er dun!'”

I think for my three tasks, I’m going to:

  1. Recover my ironing board
  2. Mop the floor in my longarm room and put down my new cushy mat
  3. Clean the shelves above my mailing counter

That otta keep me busy!

We’ll have one more task to add tomorrow, so have fun with this one, and be sure and check back in!

I have 2 Project Linus tops that I need to get batting pieces sewn together so I can get them quilted whenever I have time. I also need to check the backing for each to see if I need to add any width. The other task will be making an updated UFO list so I can see what I need to focus on next year. It’s part of my year end routine.

  2. Randy says:

Well, I was shocked how neat my papers were from last years cleaning. I still threw out a bag and moved some family photos to the bedroom.
    I was just going to bind a Linus… 1.
I will take the pile of batting and make another frankenbatting batting for the next Linus 2.
Sweep the floor of my studio 3. ( does not get swept even monthly.

  3. Diana S says:

I could easily pick most of them. I do have a quilt here that needs binding. I have several t
Rotary cutters that need new blades. Definitely need to sweep the dust bunnies and fabric scraps up. Maybe I”ll start with those

  4. Debbi says:

I did one task yesterday that I’ll count for this…I created space in a cabinet for my accuquilt dies, labeled and inventoried them. Feels so much better! And hopefully will keep me from buying more duplicates🤪

Today I’m going to deal with what I had to remove from the cabinet to make space. I’m finding several things that just need a little bit to finish. I’m going to inventory and coral them together and then find a place to put them. They can be my first ufo finishes for 2022.

Thanks again for your effort in posting this. I’m feeling more motivated than ever to git er done!

  5. christopher thomas says:

Well I did buy some fabric, on the Monday after Christmas and this morning when I got up I did 3 loads of fabric and have it all ready to press in the morning as I go to work here in a little over an hour.

So will iron in the morning and get put away….as they should be bringing my shelves for the sewing area tomorrow if we do not get all the snow stuff that is to come….then I will work on moving all the fabric to the dressers and shelves….

The last thing that has been done today is that a friend of mine we bought a room full of stuff well we got it all loaded today in 2 trucks and got it all gone through and some givin away and some to go out in the trash on Tuesday…..so I hope I have covered 3 of the things to go for this task….

    happy quilting everyone

  6. Mary Delia says:

Worked on paper clutter for a while and recycled lots
of useless paper from my desk. Yay.

  7. Cindy Wienstroer says:

My 3 simple tasks: borders on baby quilt, gather UFO’s to make list, and trim some dog ears off half square triangles. Now to go do them!

  8. Rose Marie Smith says:

I am making charity quilts from leftover scraps. I quilted one of them today and when it is bound it will go to Linus Children’s Cancer Charity. Task One.
Now to get it bound. Cut the binding. Task Two.
Shoot it is nearly 4:00 PM. I gotta figure out Task Three. I can do it………………………. I hope.

  9. Pam Desilets says:

I gathered fabric and pattern for QOV. I have group herein western Massachusetts. I have to make kits , with fabric and panels. I am doing a workshop for my local guild. I think that covers task two! Now what are you coming up with for task3?🤔

  10. Cindy Wienstroer says:

Got the borders on the baby quilt, have piles on floor for the list of UFO’s, and will work on dog ears tonight while watch tv. Yay!

  11. Barbara W. says:

I will go through a basket of scraps and cut squares for a 9-patch I want to make. Sort through some larger scraps and see what I can get rid of and pass on to a friend. And some general organizing of my fabric cupboard. Thant should keep me busy!

  12. Ginabeth says:

Today I worked on my paper pile. It was not very big, but I did print some things to add to it. It was patterns I printed, BOMs I meant to do this year but did not, and some Lori Holt Simple shapes info sheets.

I put the Simple Shapes in a new zipper notebook and the patterns with them. I put all the BOMs in the notebooks and printed missing pages. I even went through my phone and deleted the PDFs because I had backed up to computer. Paper gone 😊

I also worked on my computer to check the organization structure. It helped to get some things on a hard drive and off my phone. So I guess I did one of the tasks for today. I have some batting pieces to put together for a quilt and binding to make. Hopefully task 2 tomorrow. I really do feel a sense of accomplishment ☺️
    Thanks Shelly

  13. Done. I mostly did tidying and cleaning up after projects that I’ve finished. It’s nice to have a clear space next to my sewing machine again.

  14. Marsha Y. says:

I did manage to clear the paper clutter from my desk. Now I can just start the new year with new objective to keep it clean! Thanks for your motivation. Now I plan on finishing the binding for a wall hanging.

  15. Sandi Scarlett says:

I quilted and bound two charity quilts this week that I’ve had since November and today I cleaned up my cutting table of the scraps from them. I also fused my next applique` that I’ve been going to do for the last few weeks. I also got the indoor Christmas decorations put away. So I finished the 2nd day and have taken care of the paper stuff in my quilt room but have decided to wait on purging my mom’s papers as I’m not sure how long I need to keep them.

  16. Judy S says:

There are so many, it makes it hard to decide. I brought home four quilts from a consignment store yesterday, so need to find places for them. My favorite rotary cutter needs a new blade and I have a BOM to prep for some applique. Now, to git ‘er done.

  17. Beverly Constantine says:

would like to join you in the 2022- 350 challenge. Have not done this before, but make a lot of donation quilts.

  18. My three tasks are:
    1. Trim Kolache Quilt
    2. Add Binding to Kolache
    3. Put Away Christmas Wrapping Paper

these are doable, so that is a good thing.

  19. Carol says:

I’m in the process of relocating my sewing room in preparation of renos, so this was an easy task! Lots of small 5 minute jobs got done which included more purging ( thanks to inspiration from Dawn from the Minimal Mom) and planning for new projects (yep I only have 2 projects in the works!!).

  20. Marlene Clausen says:

One is so easy, I can’t believe I keep ignoring it. Put the Christmas fabric back in the Christmas fabric bin and take it back to the “fabric storeroom.” I finished my last Christmas project days ago. Why is the fabric still piled up in my sewing room?? Oh, and task 2? Take the Autumn/Halloween fabric bin back to the fabric storeroom. Nothing more going to happen with it for a LOT of months!! Task 3, probably go through a very small basket that has stuff that all needs to go back to where it belongs. Then . . . back to quilting my last UFO of the year. Happy New Year!

  21. Sharon says:

My first task for today is to get the binding on one of the two in the binding pile so I can pass it off to the guild’s community service chair when I see her Tuesday.
Then I need to get out the GO!Big and rectangle dies to cut lots from the scrap basket for two different donation quilts. I think I have enough for five or six cut now.
Then I needed to trace the patterns from Laura Heine’s Garden Party (that I’ve had for at least three years) onto Steam a Seam 2, so I can get going on that quilt top. That didn’t get done, but that was still quite a bit for one day.
There is still much to do, like getting the chosen backs for two tops seamed so I can load them and get them quilted. There are also two tops that need the chosen borders cut and attached. Etc., etc.

  22. We’re making a list, checking it THRICE…yep, that’s what I was thinking as I worked.

  23. Tonia says:

Finished the last four blocks of my Christmas tree table topper! Now to border and quilts the 7th?

  24. Paula Mullet says:

I finished the last two units of my “Springtime in Arrow Rock” quilt. Then I assembled all the parts. I had to make a few corrections on earlier parts as I discovered I had missed a strip of fabric and turned a block wrong. I now need to search my stash for some border fabric. I wanted to wait until the top was together to pick something. I also did some reorganizing of the shoe bags on the closet doors in my sewing room. They are full of various sewing supplies and I put things together, and freed up more pockets. 🙂

  25. Three simple tasks? So much fun to isolate only 3 from my list:
    1. Quit delaying and just design and sew a quilt top for my DH using a bag of leftover hst’s, four patches and 3 1/2” squares in blue and white.
    2. Finalize my PHD list and donate the quilt tops that I’m not wanting to finish.
    3. Deal with the bits in my overly full scrap bin (again).

  26. Linda Lowell McKinley says:

Two quilts bound and labeled, backings ready for 3 more. Finished the Springtime in Arrowrock quilt top and shipped it to long armer.
    Thanks for the suggestions!

  27. Jocelyn says:

    1. I finished the binding of a table runner that has been sitting for quite a while.
    2. I cleared off my cutting table.
    3. Put away Christmas wrapping paper back in the attic.

  28. Stephanie says:

    1) put the binding on a UFO
    2) pin basted a donated top for quilting
    3) made a decision and cut the border for another UFO
Such good suggestions – thanks Shelly!

  29. Christi Bentley says:

    1. Finished the binding on my Snoopy Quilt!
    2. Organized my UFO’s (put parts and pieces with patterns into plastic tubs) and made a new list of UFO’s for 2022.
    3. Organized my scrap tubs and put all my precuts together in a drawer.
My daughter may not be happy when she realizes I’ve taken over the empty drawers in her dresser, but it’s so close to my sewing room! And the drawers were empty! And it looks so much better not to have that stuff stacked everywhere!

  30. Marsha Y. says:

I finally finished the binding a large wall hanging. Feels great to get a project completed!!!!

  31. Beverly V. says:

Task One: Quilt Top sandwiched and put together.
    Task Two: sewing feet organized
    Task Three: UFO quilted

  32. Karen says:

Task One: moved old heavy sewing machines to a shelf that I can more easily pick them up from.
Task Two: moved all batting and bulky fabrics to one shelving unit,
Task Three: re-organized drawers of sewing desk
So happy to have got these things done, that I’d been putting off.

  33. Diana S. says:

Finished binding quilt. Prepped a tablerunner for quilting. Finally put away my Christmas fabrics that I was using for the dog scarves. Had to make room for the fabrics for the next batch!

  34. It’s fun to read what everyone has accomplished. Nice to have company in these challenges 🙂
1: Put away all the groups of fabrics that had collected from whatever projects I had been planning the past several months.
2: Put all my current projects/supplies back into their respective boxes and back on the shelves.
3: Put away patterns, magazines, books and random ‘stuff’.
