2012 Final Countdown Task One

Posted on December 29, 2012 by prairiemoonquilts in The Final Countdown

It’s time . . . time for the first task in this year’s Final Countdown.

Do you realize this is the fourth Final Countdown I’ve sponsored? Wow, time really does get away fast.

Anyway, I know you’re just bursting to know what it is I’m going to have you do today.

So, without further ado, here is your first task:

Locate your UFO that’s closest to being done, and do something about it.

Now I’m giving you some options related to this. For me, the UFO closest to being done could be any one of the quilt tops I have laying in a pile that just need to be quilted and have the binding put on.

But . . . I’m also going to include in this task things such as quilt tops that need only the borders added, or just a couple more pieces appliqued down, or a backing prepared, or a batting located, or even just the binding put on. If you’re someone who sends your quilts out to be quilted, then simply finishing the top so you can put the ball in your machine quilter’s court will suffice. Then it’s off your plate at least, right?

Or if you’ve recently gotten one back from your quilter, and just don’t have the binding on yet, get at it!

All that counts toward completion of this task. Of course, if you really want to tackle quilting a top and then putting on the binding, that’s fantastic. I’m not sure I’ll be quite that energetic my ownself, but I’m sure I can dig out a top that needs just one little thing done to finish it up. I’ll get right on that . . .

How about you?

I can’t wait to see what UFOs get unearthed during this task. Be sure and share it with us all. Leave a comment, or write your own post and give us the link so we can go look!

And I’ll be back tomorrow with your next task, so as My Cowboy would say: “Don’t dawdle!”

Too funny, when I couldn’t sleep last night (I had to keep taking the dog out) I decided to make up two lists 1. had all the quilt tops that are done waiting for me to quilt…..there were 13 on that list 2. quilts that I am working on that are almost done, which were 4. Now there’s probably some that I forgot about at 2 am that should be included in one of those lists. Either way I decided I had a lot to do. Sitting here is the pieces of a quilt I want to start, and I told myself “No, you have to get some of the others done first”. BTW snowing here.

I’m thinking this could be hard. I guess that would be the quilt that I layered and pin basted about two weeks ago. But in the meantime I am piecing away. Here I go upstairs to change the thread on the machine and make some headway on that quilt. Aye, Aye, Captain.

I have a quilt on the back of my sewing chair that is waiting for me to finish the binding on. It has been waiting for a while. I just had surgery so what better excuse to finish it. I can’t get up and work, but I can lay back and turn the binding.

I did it?! I read your blog and ran to my sewing room… read all about it on my blog… http://www.notionnanny.blogspot.ca

    I DID IT!!

I read your blog and ran down to my sewing room. Read all about it on my blog http://notionnanny.blogspot.ca/

OK, I did! I did two! I can’t show them because they are round robins or swaps 🙂 but Thanks for the kick, they are done!

OHMIGOODNESS! This turned out to be ever such a mistake. Not working on the UFO. That was a good idea. But back in November when I went to the AQS show, I stopped on the way at a local quilt shop and bought a new thread that was supposed to be a cheaper version of Aurifil. It may be cheaper; but it acts nothing like lovely Aurifil. I have pulled off
this project until I can get my brain to figure out a really good alternative idea.

I have a quilted jacket that I got mad at because I ran out of the strips I wanted and…well, you know how these things go. I am going to do something about it. At one time that might have meant “throw it away,” but I will give “finish it” at try instead. I’ll let you know soon. Like tomorrow. It needs to be done!

Well, since I try to NOT have many UFO’s (an order from my step-son) I decided to finish piecing the top on my sewing machine. I have been working on it off and on for several months with other things in between. Got it pieced and already have the backing and binding for it, just not sewn together.

I had surgery on my wrist 3 weeks ago, so I wont be doing anything quilt related for a while. Well maybe just dream

With my sewing space temporarily turned into an art gallery, it’s tough to get to anything, but I just remembered that I quilted a small quilt on the 17th and it needs binding. I’ll see if I can’t get both Saturday’s and Sunday’s tasks done Sunday. I’ve taken the zipper off, so progress has occurred, but I’m beat – and this after a 3 hour nap!

  13. Melissa says:

Mom and I had some plush toy blocks made from scraps of fabric used in other quilts that were assembled but unfinished for lack of stuffing. I went out and bought a big bag of polyfil, then my sister, Mom, and I sat down and stuffed and closed them up. They went home with a little friend of ours after visiting them Saturday afternoon.

I only have one UFO; a paper pieced double quilt that is done other than a triple mitered border. I’ve never made a mitered border and it has held me back. I took it out, cut the borderers and will either try mitering them or attaching the usual way. I will get it done!

  15. Diane Jarvis says:

My UFO that I am working on won’t get finished in the time alloted but I will tell you about it anyway! I chose to get Snow Daze out and work on it. I had all of the blocks embroidered but didn’t have the pieced blocks done. I got those finished the weekend before Christmas and am now starting to work on the rest in sections. 2 sections down 3 more to go!I started this project over a year ago. Time to get it done!

  16. Cindy says:

Well I was hoping to get five UFO’s off my list before January 5th. Don’t know if I will make it or not, but I did get the binding put on two baby quilts. So that is two off my list.

  17. Tamara says:

Well one of the projects that I am close to finishing is actually a knit blanket if that counts! I have it out and it is being worked on so hopefully it will be finished soon!

I like this idea of a final countdown. I’ve been able to focus on these projects because I have a deadline–set by you. I guess I’m not disciplined enough to set deadlines for myself. I’m a true procrastinator with too many irons in the fire. For this deadline, I sewed buttons to close the back of a pillow I made for a good friend. The front is preprinted with Eccl. 3:1-2, 4-5.
