Studio Organizing, Week 42

Posted on October 16, 2015 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

How’d you do this past week?

Don’t ask me how I did, because it should be obvious that I don’t even know what day it is, since I didn’t get this posted yesterday!

Are your needles all neatly organized now?

I know you’ll find this hard to believe, but mine are. I needed this task as a break from some of the harder stuff I’ve been having to do. It was like a rest for my brain!

I found a packet of needles I had purchased for my sewing machine that don’t fit quite right, so my needle threader won’t work on them. Why was I hanging on to those? Out they went.

I also found several partial packages of needles the same type and size that I could combine into one, which helped neaten things up. I feel better. It’s the little things, right?

I did also discover that I have a lifetime supply of hand quilting needles, and should never need to buy any more, and that I’m short on embroidery needles and need to pick some up somewhere!

And now we’re ready for this week’s task. It’s another repeat, but it’s because I’ve never been done with it when we’ve done it before, and more just keeps piling up. We’re going to:

Work on organizing books and magazines (and patterns)

The magazines keep appearing in the mail every so often, and I haven’t even worked my way through the pile of magazines I already had to begin with, so we’re revisiting this task, simply because I need to. I’m wondering if you do, too?

Have you acquired more magazines since the last time we did this?

Were you organized enough after the last time that you have a neat place to put it away? Or did you just add it to the pile like I do?

Have you pulled some out looking for a particular article or pattern and not put them away?

Have you printed more patterns off the internet and not put them where they need to be yet?

This is our week! I still have two large piles of magazines to sort through, and after the whirlwind month I’ve had, I’m ready to sit down. It’ll be a nice break to look at magazines for a while and sort through them. I’m starting with this pile in my office floor. How about you?

  1. I do need this task. I no long subscribe to mags except Machine Quilting Unlimited because I have so many mags with projects I’d like to do -enough said. Same with books. I keep finding dups and am giving those away as giveaways. I’m also culling some and giving those away too. As I go through mags, if I don’t find anything I want to save, I toss them into the box for the guild. Thanks for this repeat, Shelly.

I took last week off – I don’t really have a large supply of needles.

This week’s project will be good for me. Most of my patterns are on my ipad – which is really handy when I go shopping I can take a lot of my patterns with me. Several times this have prevented me from buying duplicates. I do have several small 3 ring binders that have printed patterns I would like to combine into one large binder. I even have the binder but you know how that goes – not a priority. This week it is now top of the list.

sigh….I guess the fact that I need to find two patterns is my sign…..Do you have an organizing scraps task? I am about to embark on some cutting and trimming on mine. I just want credit!

    Safe travels! Feel better soon.

Good timing Shelley. I have a stack of magazines, patterns and miscellaneous papers on the floor of my studio that must be taken care of as I am tired of looking at them and stumbling over them.

I just got rid of a 100 books and 50 separate patterns. Made a big hole. My needles are kept in a tin I bought ages ago. I won’t be on for a while. My brother-in-law passed Wednesday morning. But I will keep any posts you do so I can read them later.

Well I am isolated on the first floor with healing on a hip replacement so my sewing room is all by itself…. People keep going up to fetch stuff. I DO WISH I had kept up with the organizing.

  7. Meloney says:

My books are organized still. 🙂
I do need to add more magazines, they kept showing up out of the blue.

I got rid of almost 10 years of magazines and lots of books last June before the move to town. I am only subscribed to two magazines now. For awhile I have this under control. I guess I could go back and do the needles from last month. I do need to buy some more machine needles.

Here is a question. I use mostly size 14 needles for my Janome. At the Des Moines AQS show there was a quilt “advisor” who told everyone to only use a size 12. Does everyone else use that size more than a 14?

  9. Got rid of 2 mags and kept four and that’s as far as I got – but hey, did something! Yes, I’ll tackle a drawer. I have lots of those – and shelves.
    Some day!

  10. Meloney says:

I can’t find the other post, so I’ll post here.
I did get some things back on the shelf, so I feel good about it. I imagine there will still be more later, but I have a blank spot in my desk and that is a good thing.
I picked the drawer to tackle.

  11. Just wanted you to know that the email for your blog that came out on 10-21-15 contained a broken link for your daily post 🙁 I can still read it in my email, just can’t comment.
