January 350 Blocks Report

Posted on January 31, 2018 by prairiemoonquilts in 350 Blocks Project

Here we are at the end of January already!

If you looked at the Project page, you will have noticed that our monthly goal for blocks in January was only 10. Since we kicked off mid-month, I figure that’s a doable number.

I have the Project page updated, but please double check me and make sure you’re on the list if you’re supposed to be. If you have a blog for me to link to, you should also have a working link, so let me know if there are any broken ones. And I’ll update new numbers in a few days after people have started reporting in!

So here we go . . .

I got a big fat ZERO this month! I have not touched my sewing machine AT ALL, except to make the dog a new bed which she hasn’t even laid on yet, because as soon as I put it down for her, the cats took it, and she’s afraid to challenge the cats for it! So the cats have a giant new bed, and the dog still lays in the floor — uff! My Cowboy said, “I don’t know why you keep calling it a dog bed!”

Other than that, I have not used my sewing machine even one time. I sure do miss it — and I think it may even miss me! I plan to remedy that in February, tho. January was just all messed up for me.

How about you?

I hope you got your year off to a better start than I did. Did you get to make at least 10 blocks?

Report in by leaving a comment on this post or contacting me, and let us all know your number for January.

Our block goal for February is 14, a good Valentine number!

You can see all the information on the Project Page here, and remember to double check me and make sure I have everything correct.

Happy stitching in February!

  1. Hi Shelly! So glad you’re doing better. Please add me back to the list, I seem to have disappeared. My January total is 29, and I’m happy enough with that. I’m trying to exceed each month’s goal so that I don’t get behind in Nov/Dec, since I rarely have time to sew blocks during the holidays.

  2. I had an extremely productive month, and made 4 quilt tops, finished a 5th quilt top, quilted 3 on my longarm, and am working on another one right now!! I had 187 blocks for January! I doubt all months will be this good, but it was a very fun month of sewing and quilting!

  3. Hi, Shelly. My block total for January is 17.

  4. Becky says:

I just finished my 50th block for January. My goal was more. There’s always Feb!

  5. Rose Marie says:

I finished 25 blocks in January…………plus a whole lot of elements for 56 more blocks. But according to the rules I can’t count those elements – just the complete blocks when they are finished. February here I come.

  6. Hi Shelly, My total was 27 blocks for January. The same thing happens here the cats own everything. We have one who even tries to muscle my husband out of his chair because he wants it. Sew anything new the cats think I am making it for them.

  7. Angela says:

I finished 105 blocks and sewed them together for my first finished quilt top for this year!
My goal is to finish a quilt top every month.

  8. Johnna Clarke says:

    Hi, Shelly,

I finished 30 blocks!!! I’m excited as it’s the Happily Ever After quilt, and it is beautiful!! I took liberties on the border and designed my own from scraps. I am so proud of myself as I’m such a novice. I hope to keep up the momentum. Thanks for your encouragement!

  9. Pam Martin says:

I’ve finished 50 blocks for the Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt, now I just need to put it together. The sashing components are made.I just need to make the setting triangles.

  10. Marlene Clausen says:

Put down 10 for me. Had no idea the goal was 10; but, that was my total. I did complete 4 ufo’s. YEAH!! My personal challenge is for each ufo I finish, I get to make a new item (quilt, bag). A couple of the completed ones have been waiting at least 15 years. Geesh. I also pieced the last five blocks (half the total count!) of a sampler I began last year and set aside to make Christmas gift quilts and a baby quilt. That sampler is very special and was made to showcase a charm pack of one of Angela Walter’s fabric lines for RJR. My friend, Jean (James Country Mercantile) bought them for me at Angela’s store. I rarely keep quilts for myself, but this one is definitely mine, even though my daughter saw it a few days ago and made some acquisition noises. I have to quilt two gift quilts and then my “baby” is going under the needle.

  11. Virginia Smith says:

I have finished 40 blocks and hopefully before the night is over they will be all together for a completed twin quilt top.

  12. Aileen Kline says:

Hi. I have Zero. Working on other things.

  13. Wendy says:

100 for me, thanks partly to a QAL with lots of blocks to make!

  14. randy says:

Okay we had hellish weather so I put my fire proof pants on an got 47 blocks done. This was a 5 week month, so I was driven. I did drift a bit. I did a binding. I quilted a large lap, I made 14 fabric boxes. I have found a new way to get more fabric in a cabinet. I reckon I need about 10 more.

  15. Louise says:

I have 54 completed blocks and a LOT of components made. I probably won’t finish those blocks until March.

  16. Karen Edwards says:

Hi, Shelly. My block total for January is 110. Off to a good start.

  17. Maxine says:

94 blocks for me! 50 for the On Ringo Lake. My first quilt top of the year. A baby quilt that had 40 blocks. My first finish of the year! and now I am working on Craftsy BOM 2017, Blazing Star. I have completed 4 of the blocks.

  18. Stephanie says:

January is always a good month for me. New Year enthusiasm ‘n all.
I made 126 blocks, across 6 different quilt projects.

  19. Grammi (aka Tonia) says:

I did 68—amazed myself! I am doing a “deployment quilt” for granddaughter–and wasn’t paying attention to log cabins—when I put it together I found that there are enough to do a nice size lap quilt for another serviceman. Silly me. Now I am working on last year’s Bonnie — so since components don’t count my numbers will be down for Feb.

  20. Phillis Harding says:

I managed to get 113 blocks done this month. A lot of those were paper pieced and took forever. I finished piecing one UFO, now I need to quilt and bind it. Hopefully I can get as many done next month.

  21. Diana says:

I had a good month-78 blocks. Pulled out a UFO at the beginning of the month. I call it a UFO as I had only started cutting, but no blocks sewn. 36 blocks for that quilt. Then I made the stash pattern (Stay Centered) from Sparrow Quilt in Edmonton, Alberta. That was 42 blocks.
The last 2 weeks we took a trip to the Texas coast. I did take my machine. Put the Stay Centered quilt top together and also got the binding on 5 quilts!!!
Went to a great quilt show on South Padre Island the last weekend of the month. It was a good trip, I got some things done and Galen got some great pictures of wildlife. Some new life birds for him.

  22. Barbara B says:

135 blocks for January, it was a good month.

  23. Mary D says:

I have 50 for the month. A large portion of them were simple 9-patches, but a block is a block!

  24. Amanda M. says:

Since it was too cold to do anything else and my machine prefers to chain piece, I made 196 blocks for 8+ projects- 3 styles of Linus quilts and 2 different Veterans of which I got one top done. I also created 2 tote bags for friends and hand stitching binding onto a quilt. I just hope I get those blocks into tops next month so I have room to make more blocks!

  25. Marilyn holder says:

Total for January is 42…finished blocks on first info of this year…trying to make up for lost time last year. Glad you are feeling better, just don’t rush it.

  26. Marsha Yahl says:

I was busy quilting this month, but also got 54 blocks done, plus started on some for next month. Glad to hear you are feeling better.

  27. Betty K says:

My total for Jan is 91. I have done a lot of itty bitty blocks. I have also done 6 mug rugs (even one for me).
Let’s hope I keep up the momentum.

  28. Elaine says:

My total is 27. Finished two ufo’s, my January goal! I feel good about that. Glad you are doing ok now.

  29. Hi Shelly,

Please put me down for 28 blocks for January. I made 24 cute paper pieced square in square blocks for a swap that I’m in. I made 2 cat blocks and 2 Americana blocks for two other swaps. I also made a lot of partial blocks…when I sew all those partial blocks together I’ll have a big total…but that wasn’t this month. đŸ™‚

I hope you get more chance to sew this month. I bought fabric (flannel) yesterday to make the cats some new beds. I take a yard of flannel turn it good sides together and sew around the edges leaving an opening so I can turn it right side out. Then I fill it with all the clippings from sewing projects, bits of yarn, bits of thread (cut into pieces not more than 2 1/2 inches long), and bits of batting. I generally fill about the first 8 inches of the pillow…then run a line of stitching to keep the scraps in place…then fill it another 8 inches or so and run another line of stitching. This keeps the filling from shifting when the beds are laundered. They launder really well this way. My kitties like their beds a lot. Eventually, I’ll have enough to replace all of their round beds which have over time gotten pretty flat.

  30. KT says:

It was a good month for me–I finished 30 blocks and 2 quilts!

  31. Susan siemens says:

Greetings from Alberta! I got 93 blocks done in January. My adult kids were leaving home after the holidays, one of them on a naval assignment so I sewed my heart out. 36 of these blocks were depression blocks which involved 576 half squares. Hope you get to sew more next month. Thank you for the challenge.

  33. Linda Knight says:

I had a good month for me with 40 blocks completed. I also got a small quilt quilted but can’t bind it until I get my machine back from it’s checkup. I realized I have had it for over 2 years and hadn’t had it serviced.

  34. Sherry V. says:

    Hi Shelly,

Put me down for 20 blocks! Yay me!! LOL

I did one block for Stash Bee swap and then nineteen blocks for my Four Patch Posy project.

This is definitely a great start to my year. Thank you.

  35. Shirley Guier says:

I have been busy sewing and finishing things but not making blocks. I have 8 for this month.

  36. Karen R says:

Meant to comment on Wed., but life interfered. Total block count for January was 18. Have no idea what February will bring… Have several tops to complete and get off to the quilter and know that will have an impact on # of blocks for February. Have a good month.

  37. Michele says:

127 blocks for January. A lot of those were very simple snowball blocks, but quite a few were more complicated. A goal for me this year is “sew every day” with a stretch goal of “a block a day” – and for January I did it!!

  38. Cheryl says:

Hi, I had 35 blocks for January. Hope to do better in February.

  39. Dedie lawless says:

I made a crumb blocks that im going to eventually turn into lap quilts for the elderly my goal is 6 quilts if i have enough scraps only time will tell . Feb wont be a whole lot of sewing for me since im away visiting my grands.

  40. Patricia Hotz says:

Hi Shelly!! I too seem to have disappeared from the List. I would love to get back on it if I can. I made 34 blocks. 30 blocks for a church quilt and 4 for a scrapy quilt I wanna make Thank you.

  41. Deanna says:

This month went better than I thought it might–56 blocks for me. It really helped that I had some partial projects that were taken to finished tops. Also, that I have a leader-ender running–that alone added 9 blocks.

  42. Woohoo! 127 blocks for January. Two baby quilts and two minis finished and a 20 year – old UFO is under my machine for quilting! Thanks for the motivation!

  43. Danice says:

Count me for 7 blocks in January. Not as many as hoped for, but some anyway.

  44. Michelle G says:

    I have 8 blocks made.

  45. Janet Smith says:

    My January count is 141.

  46. Beverly V says:

My total for January is 19. I made a baby quilt that was a learning quilt with blocks that have different closures. They are velcro, button, snap, and tie. It was a big hit at the shower. I was short only 2 blocks of getting my first quilt top done for 2018. I will finish this one in February. This month I am planning on cutting from my stash to make scrap quilts, so don’t know how many I will be able to make. I am also going to be gone for a week, so won’t get to work on quilting that week.

  47. denniele says:

205 blocks! Finally was able to count some that had been hiding for a while! Stay warm and keep those sweet babies warm.

  48. JanetD says:

It’s amazing how much some people are able to get done, lucky them! I – alas – only made 4 blocks in January, but it’s better than the zero’s I racked up in the ending months of 2017. At least I proved I still know how to sew!

  49. Beth F says:

Wow! January was productive! I finished all my assembly/quilting/binding in December & jumped into new projects with abandon this month for a total of 114!

  50. Judy S. says:

I made 43 blocks in January. Not a bad start.

  51. christopher thomas says:

I got 64 blocks done in January….hope to get that or more done in Feb…..thanks for the push to do more

  52. Delana Becker says:

Hi Shelly. I made thirteen blocks for January.

  53. Shelly E Richards says:

I had several swaps due and was in over my head this month. I promise to not over commit myself like that again, it wasn’t fun, which sewing and quilting usually is for me. My completed blocks this month ranked in size from 3.5″-12.5″.

    I made 78 blocks!
