2024 Final Countdown, Task Two

Posted on December 30, 2024 by prairiemoonquilts in The Final Countdown

Are you working on your sewing machine areas? I put away some scrap triangles and pressed some pieces I had laying there already sewn, but I still need to examine the drawers and clean up the dust bunnies during my next session.

But it’s already time for Task Two!

What you can’t see in the photo of my sewing area is the floor in my studio. It’s a mess. So that’s our next task:

Aside from all the random piles of “stuff” sitting everywhere, the dust bunnies multiply like . . . well . . . bunnies! I’m shocked at how many there are, if I even go a few days without swiffering. And . . . it’s difficult to swiffer very well when the floor is full of piles, too. So . . . I need to address this problem. Here’s the current state of my lovely new studio — very cringe-y — (not exactly the tour I want to give you!):

In my defense, I’m still waiting on two pieces of furniture to get moved into this room, which will help with a few of the piles. For instance, books will get put in the bookcase instead of piled on the floor. And I should really move all the empty tubs out to the garage because my goal is to not fill them back up with stuff — I want them gone completely, now that they’re empty. I’ve given a few of them away, but I’m still hanging on to a few just in case we need them in the barn or garage.

So let’s do this:

  • • Try your best to clear the floor if you have lots of piles like I do.
  • • Sweep up/pick up the threads, dropped pins, dust bunnies, and other trash that just gets flung while you’re creating.
  • • Swiffer or vacuum to get the remaining dust.
  • • Mop, if you need to.

There, doesn’t that feel better?

You may have heard me say before that my entire goal (for my entire house) is “clear floors”. I don’t want to have to clean around very much furniture, so in my new house, most things are built in, and we have very little furniture, which makes it really easy to clean. The studio? It still needs a lot of help, but my goal is still definitely “clear floors”, which I’ll be working toward ASAP.

How about you? Are you using your floor for temporary storage like I am? Dust bunnies love to hide in those piles. Let’s tackle them together with this task.

And be sure to tune in tomorrow for our third and final task!

My floor is clean, but still need to vacuum the bits of thread left over.

  2. Randy Menninghaus says:

I have to use a broom as logistics to not allow anything else. I don’t own a swifer… Perhaps I should

  3. Jill K says:

I cleaned my sewing table and my ironing table yesterday. I did tidy the floor in those areas at the same time. However, my room is big and there’s many opportunities for more cleaning of the floor!

  4. PAULA M MO says:

Oh man, this will be a challenge…it will be raining here tomorrow for a few days, I might skip the mopping. I have piles of Christmas ect., with my piles of where is this fabric going…

  5. Kerry says:

Floor is clean, but I do have bags of “what do I do with this?” Two bags belonged to my truck while it had it’s service. I went through those and now the bags are sorted in the truck. Yayyy! Others have quilts being worked on. I understand the boxes and tubs from moving! My big containers are now in the barn with duck and chicken feed in them – keeps the rodents out! The cardboard boxes went to our son who was moving. Your room looked very familiar! LOL!

  6. Genny says:

You need a robot vacuum! Your house sounds perfect for one of those! I’m so happy for you!

  7. Cindy Wienstroer says:

Ok, not too hard – need to pick up some to vacuum and get into the hidden areas to get rid of dust. Make a few more 9 patches then get busy!

  8. Paula Mu says:

Wow do I need this task. My floor is a mess with lots and lots of piles and a messy rug. Off to get started with task 2 and continue work on task 1.

  9. Rose P says:

I have some tubs on the floor, but they act as an extension table for my sewing area. I recently acquired about 20 bolts of fabric and 5 rolls of cheater quilts. I have stacked the bolts under the longarm for lack of someplace to put them. I did get the vacuum out and got up all of the stray threads and I got some PIGS (projects in grocery sacks) stored in better locations than the floor.

i took care of this yesterday so the floor is good. I worked on putting the patterns away and worked on getting things ready of what I want to do for the 4 quilt retreats I have coming up. my plan it to do 4 projects at each retreat so I have bags and got some patterns in the bags and as I find or buy more fabric get that put in the bag as well. if all goes well I am in hope to have all the fabric cut so all I have to do is sew sew sew.

    happy quilting everyone

Yay! I got the vacuum cleaner out today and took care of the floor. I used the Swiffer under my sewing machine table…frightening! There were sooooo many dust bunnies…and fabric snippets. Whew! Glad to have this task completed. 😀

I did clean up my sewing machine area and now I am working on the floor. I am sharing my sewing room with a daughter and she would love it if I would get my piles off of the floor so that she could vacuum!
Your new studio looks so nice.

  13. Debbi says:

The floor…always stuff there that needs a home! I had my floor pretty clear with my last big declutter but somehow instead of just one tub with some quick and easy to finish projects, it’s still there with some friends. The furniture pieces I have just don’t have space to accommodate most of these extra things. And the room is too full. I put away everything that has a home, but it didn’t make a big difference. The truth is I need another big declutter or to sew faster.

I too dream of having clear floors that are easy to clean! I did do a vacuum and the main area is good but I know I need to get behind and underneath the cabinets and shelves. It’d be wonderful to have built-ins! It’s such a dilemma… do I sew and quilt or do I clean? The first is much more fun!

  14. Carol Cunningham says:

I cleaned my floor the other day. Then I saw so many bags with scrape material left over from many projects. 90% were blue fabric, stripes, flowers, everything you can think of. I also found several orphaned blocks and I remember what you told me once. Take all those blocks and scrapes and make a quilt! So I’m doing it! It’s really going to be strange but I’ll be getting rid of all that stuff. And I’m naming the quilt “Get rid of your blues”. LOL

  15. Joan says:

    Done! Now on to PHD’s!

  16. Candice says:

Shelly, I think you deserve a HUGE pat on the back for moving. IMG! I can’t imagine moving my home plus a quilt studio!!! The pre-move sorting and deciding what to keep and what to throw is daunting enough. And once you finally get everything into the new space you have to figure out how you are going to work and what to put where. So, I think you should buy yourself a bouquet of flowers and put them on top of one of those piles and just be grateful you’re “in”. I would!

  17. cathy k says:

Done with number2. I can see a lot of floor now. Thanks

  18. Sandy Hughes says:

Task Two is finished….I did the floor area the same time I worked on Task One. I’m happy with the way my sewing area is looking !

  19. Diana S says:

My task 2 was different. We have been emptying our biggest storage unit. I still had boxes of books stored there from when we did remodeled our upstairs. Went through 5 boxes of books and magazines. Most have gone to a new home!

  20. Moira T says:

This is done! I actually took everything out from the closet floor, too and manage to find a spot for my prize Christmas present: a Sashiko 2 machine!

The whole room has been dusted and swiffered.
I’m ready for the new year! Yeah!

Can’t wait to get it messy – in a good way – again.
    Thanks for the push.

  21. Beverly V. says:

Doing a lot of shredding in my sewing room, so I need to clean up the area. Good task to finish up the year. I hope to start the year out sewing.

  22. Kristi says:

Husband vacuumed earlier in the week! 💙

  23. Amanda says:

I found my floor in my sewing section in my library at home! My husband got a shelf put up and I finally unpacked a box of books that were in there 20 years! The Studio floor was just sweeping up the collection of dead Japanese Beetles and dust bunnies. Those dang dust bunnies multiply as fast as my scraps!

  24. Beverly says:

My floor is now full of piles to put away.. Great progress… not just random things.
And now to move piles to their home!

  25. Paula Mu says:

I did get most of the stacks off the floor of my sewing room. I also cleaned up lots of threads, etc. This task has me thinking again about removing the carpet from the room. Using a swiffer in the room sounds easier than using a vacumn that doesn’t pick up well. It is much better.

  26. Kelly Powers says:

I actually found the floor in my sewing room and was able to vacuum and dust up all the dust bunnies. The rolls of batting went on my long arm storage bar. This went a long way toward finding the floor but needed helpers to accomplish. Lots of patterns, books, etc. went back to their old homes, or had a new home found for them. The only thing on the floor now is furniture, a couple of storage bins under my daughter’s sewing table that reside there with her craft supplies, and 3 bins of grandbaby toys that reside under my longarm for lack of anywhere else to put them. Maybe not perfect, but I am very pleased.

  27. Karen says:

I love your new room, with all those windows! You must have some amazing views from there. I can’t wait to see more of it, as you get all your furniture in place.
I too, would love to see my floors cleared of the bins and piles. I did try, but still have some bins that I don’t have a shelving place for yet. But I’m getting there and did do a good vacuum of the space. Just have to keep purging and finish those old UFO’s.

  28. Stephanie says:

I still have too many things/containers on the sewing room floor, but currently I have nowhere else to put them. However, I did move them away from the wall and gave the area a really good clean/vac, before putting them back neatly. Then the rest of the floor got a vac birthday too. So nice!
