August 350 Blocks Report

Posted on August 31, 2021 by prairiemoonquilts in 350 Blocks Project

Tomorrow begins my two favorite months of the year! But I really can’t believe we’re at this point already! My truck is in the shop getting a new set of tires just in time for winter. The current set lasted me THREE years, which I believe is a record, but is also a testament to the fact that we no longer go anywhere we don’t absolutely have to!

So it stands to reason I should be getting more sewing done, right? I’m not really sure I am! But I sure do manage to fill up the time with something. This past month, I made a total of 84 blocks, most of which were for the new BOM program, Brunswick Forest.

This program begins September 11 at Sew Sweet Quilt Shop, so if you want to sign up, you can get more information HERE.

I made a few 9-patches, and a couple more 36-patch blocks, and other than that, I was at the longarm. And in retrospect, it feels like all I did for the month of August was run errands and try to take care of random stuff. It’s that “squirrel getting ready for winter” feeling! And it’s really about time to start doing just that around here, too.

So how did YOU do for August? Were you busy outside? Did you have to do the squirrel thing, too? Did you find any time at all to make some blocks? It’s time to report in and let us all know what’s going on with you. I’ve got the Project Page updated as of the time of this post, and our new block goal for September is 30 more blocks, for a yearly total of 258. Thankfully, I’m well past that, as are lots of you as well, but I don’t intend to let that stop me from making as many more as I can this year. Let’s all keep sewing!

The prize winner for July is Marlene, who’s up to 406 blocks so far.

I’ve got some more stuff to show you soon, but meanwhile, I hope you’re finding some good sewing time, and are heading into a lovely fall season.

I only created 29 blocks for 4 different projects. Very little sewing time this past month. I did get a big UFO finished in August so a win there! I know before I know it I’ll have plenty of sewing time.

  2. Clara Chandler says:

My total for August is 26.
I have 2 BOM that I’m proud to say I’m right on target completing each month’s blocks. And I, too, have a “squirrel”, Halloween is my granddaughter’s favorite holiday because it’s close to her birthday so I couldn’t pass up a new project featuring witch hats to gift her.
    Thanks, Shelley.

  3. Wendy Tuma says:

Just 64 for me this month. Maybe September will be better!

  4. Sally H says:

August total of 138 blocks, which includes one American Hero top and two commissioned memory quilts. I may not piece much in September, but hope to quilt!

  5. Kathy Parks says:

August was a good month for me. I actually got to sit down and work on a few quilts in progress. I got a total of 125 blocks completed. WOO HOO it felt good to just sit and sew.

  6. I made 47 blocks this month…nothing to rave about, but better than the last couple of months. I’ll be continuing to play catch-up in the remaining months. Love this quilt!! If I had more time I’d want to join this BOM. I’m definitely making blocks and assembling quilts, but I can’t fit in anything else.
I’m happy to hear about your truck tires, but please don’t talk to me about winter in September 🙂

  7. Deanna says:

August brought 52 more blocks. That makes 766 for this year so far. A combination of a pandemic and becoming an empty-nester may make this a record-breaking year.

  8. Pam Desilets says:

August block total 30. Been cleaning up scrap pile and quilted 4 quilts

  9. Diane says:

I managed a total of 37 blocks for August. 15 were nice and easy Rail Fence blocks. Those other 22 though were what I am calling “Sparkle” blocks from a class I took earlier this month from Julia Graves who taught the “Shimmering Triangle” quilt. The class was challenging for me as I have a little difficulty with “contrast”, but I must admit I have made some improvement!

  10. Fran says:

Love your quilt! I made 90 blocks, but I was happy with that number as I missed 12 days of sewing due to three different accidents. I am back to sewing again. Yea!

  11. Randy Menninghaus says:

    8. I may have done more… but I assembled quilts and bound. quilts and cleaned my sewing room… ( and she said… “What a good little person she was”). 20/20 vision can have its down side. I am seeing a lot of cobwebs and dust.

  12. Randy Menninghaus says:

? did my message take? If not 9 blocks.

  13. Christi Bentley says:

I had 96 this month, so an improvement over last month. I did some 4-patches and fish blocks as leader enders, finished a table runner, and did all the blocks for the quadrangle quilt and 16 for a pumpkin quilt I started.

  14. PAULA M says:

Big large 0 for me, I have downsized books, magazines, fabric, religious collectables, sorted 2 drawer file cabinet, organized contents, still scanning ( on my second scanner) pictures from last September, down to 3 boxes (moving size) , and a grocery bag of albums still to do. My last quilt in progress is still on the design wall. So much for a quilt top a month! Somehow I feel lighter. I did manage to shop some fabric in an actual store, that was really fun!

  15. Ceil Podzimek says:

My August total is 30 blocks. 26 more for my BOHO guild quilt along and 4 on a wool applique sewing mat. I’ve been pretty preoccupied getting to know my new dog, Anna, a 2 year old jack russell/bulldog mix from Wayside Waifs. She’s a bundle of energy and has to get used to my slower pace! I’m going to spend time in my sewing room today for the first time since she got here. We’ll see how it goes!

  16. denniele says:

36 for the month! But that 2020 temperature quilt is close to being started! 😉
    Your new BOM are lovely!

  17. Tough month for quilt blocks…only got 6 new ones done, but did get my churn dash quilt assembled, created a Laura Heine collage quilt in a class, and made backs/bindings for several quilts.

  18. Ginny says:

27 blocks for August. Hocus Pocus quilt all ready got the quilter & the table runner add on ready also. More cut out & ready to sew. Was able to clear some room in the piles of boxes in the camper bay to get to sit down to my sewing desk & almost get a binding on a quilt & prepare the backing for the quilt & runner I finished. So good to have space to work. Never would have gotten the backing or binding sewing done in the camper. Good month for me!

  19. Coralie Wallace says:

8 quilt blocks stitched in August. Most of the month was spent quilting quilts and finishing them off.

  20. Karen E. says:

Those tree blocks are just amazing! I made 76 blocks in August and am happy to say I bound three UFOs that came back from my quilter. My YTD total is 1148. I’m so glad the really hot weather seems to be over for this year and I’m looking forward to fall!

  21. Louise says:

184 blocks for me this month. It’s been too hot to do anything but stay inside and quilt.

  22. Linda Knight says:

I only managed 5 blocks this month but it was strips that made a small quilt top, the first I’ve been able to make in a while. Also quilted and bound 4 small quilts for donation. I donated 4 pet beds to our local animal shelter that I made from batting scraps sewed into old pillow cases. I’m glad it’s not going to the land fills until the animals wear it out.

  23. KT says:

I finished 45 blocks in August. Need to finish up a quilt so I can finally start the Arrow Rock sampler–at this point I am just collecting fabrics, but I can’t wait to start it!!

  24. Angie in SoCal says:

Another busy month. I only got 12 made. Alas!

  25. Suelynn Williams says:

August yielded 18 blocks for me. Most of my favorite time was sewing rows together and finishing a top that turned out larger than anticipated! And, thinking I was saving time buying wide backing fabric for the first time, discovered today I didn’t get quite enough.

  26. Sharon Gratz says:

Only 14 for me this month. You would think those pinwheels would go faster than that. lol But, SIL is no longer in immediate danger from Covid, per the dr.

  27. Becky Cogan says:

I finished 47 granny squares and got the quilt put together which I was excited about. Shelly you’re quite the leader. Love all your stories m

  28. Judy Sovereign says:

Ok so wasn’t a big month only 8 blocks. But did get a lot to flimsy stage . Have one on the design wall and 2 waiting.

  29. Mary D. says:

I had a pretty busy month with babysitting, watching kids show at the state fair and quilting for others. I’m. All. Caught. Up!!! It’s such a good feeling.
I did make 25 blocks, all made in the last few days.

  30. Ginabeth says:

I had 31. Had to push to get your monthly goal.
I had 3 finishes this month. Bound a long term six inch quilt block quilt (Sylvia’s Bridal Quilt), bound my Lucy Boston hand pieced by EEP (Patchwork of the Crosses) and a tablerunner (got to count 5 blocks). Was very pleased with my month.

  31. Marsha Y. says:

Even though August was a very busy month, I did get 70 blocks made the last few days. Finally got caught up on quilts for customers so hopefully we get some of mine quilted! Thanks for your inspiration Shelly!

  32. katie z. says:

I’m up to 588 (but I didn’t do my “maths” very well last month, and report 539 instead of 509).

  33. Carissa says:

I love your new BOM quilt. I’m just finishing up and autumn leaf quilt myself, and old pattern for leaves and log cabins by Judy Martin. To that end, sewed 95 blocks this month, and I’m happy with that. I hope that you have more blocks of time to work this month rather than running around.

  34. Joan says:

Completed 5 blocks on a Lucy Boston quilt. Beautiful Fall quilt you have made. Puts in mind a leaf quilt I have in progress that I should find and finish! Oh those UFO’s…

  35. Debra Freese says:

93 blocks in August for me.
The “Starlit Forest” wall hanging for my daughter-in-law is ready for quilting as is the Plus block baby quilt for our granddaughter.

  36. Julie Missias says:

August was a busy month for me with the arrival of my first grandchild (grandson). Even with all that excitement and fun, I managed to get 35 blocks and a donation flimsy quilted.

  37. Elaine Walker says:

56 blocks for me. 30 blocks for a quilt started and finished in August. Made a wall hanging and 3 Table runners. Pretty good month.

  38. Love that pretty new quilt. Good luck on finishing your squirrel projects getting ready for winter. August for me was a weird month! Being on Evacuation Alert I kept my head down, sewing alternating with running outside to watch the helicopters. It meant I managed to make 155 blocks for a YTD total of 495 blocks! When the alert was rescinded I took a trip to the studio and finished 4 large quilts on the longarm in 5 days. I even got 2 finished with binding and delivered 4 quilts to the Quilts for Lytton Drive for wildfire victims.

I think I missed last month? I had 42 blocks this month but, this month I got 20/20 vision– I can actually see the needle to thread it and no glasses!

  40. Marlene Clausen says:

150 blocks for August. One more QOV for the box to Missouri; pieced a Hanging Garden, a large quilt with very showy Kaffe Fassett fabrics; one block to finish a quilt I started in 2013 (now TaDone including label!); and, a couple one block miniatures with a LOT of tiny pieces! Spent the first day of September making masks again (and, with vaccine thought I’d seen the last of those) . Next on the agenda is to turn two tops into quilts, both are large ones. Happy almost Fall ya’ll!!

  41. Maxine E Euto says:

72 blocks for me this month! currently working on 3 projects. One is a BOM and in between those blocks I am working on another quilt that the blocks come together quickly. It is all made with my stash of fabric that is slowly dwindling because I have not really purchased any new fabric for awhile. The last project is more of a leader and ender project that’s been going on for awhile. It’s nice to be sewing on a consistent basis again!

  42. Christine Thomas says:

I’ve spent a chunk of time this month planning and piecing a Bargello panel for a wall hanging. I’m going to count it as one big block for this challenge, making my August total 22 blocks.

  43. Kathi Benchley says:

    Completed 28 blocks in August.

  44. Marsha Parkhill says:

back to making blocks–51 for me. Love Brunswick Forest

  45. Rose Marie Smith says:

I managed to make 64 blocks this month. A lot of them are made from scrappy leftovers to be put in charity quilts. But Arrowhead rules!! I am right up to date!! Keep the instructions coming.

  46. Pam M says:

46 blocks for me this month. I am caught up on the Arrow Rock blocks just waiting for the next envelope to arrive. I am looking forward to cooler weather. Hope we have a beautiful fall.

  47. Paula Mu says:

August was a slow month for me. I completed 28 blocks. I made 9 Bats and Boos blocks, 4 blocks for the Days Filled with Joy mystery, 8 Springtime at Arrow Rock blocks, 1 snowman block and 6 blocks for a table runner and hot pad.

  48. Cindy Wienstroer says:

Did 2 blocks for a baby quilt, 10 fish leader & enders, and wanted brainless work so did 3 1/2” crumb blocks (345). Still have more to do to clean up scraps! Working on some hand-quilting in quiet time. Probably will do none in Sept since going to help daughter (who is having 2nd daughter). Your tree quilt is great! I did one but need to quilt it. Hoping to have it done before the year’s end.

  49. 25 blocks for August. Which isn’t a lot as I have spent a lot of time on the computer. A new website and blog.
A lot still to learn with them but in theory everything on the same site should be good.

  50. 47 blocks for August. Not momentous but better than my last couple of months.
Beautiful quilt, Shelly! Definitely a great project as we move into autumn.

  51. 32 blocks in the month of August. 🙁 I didn’t have lots of finishes.

  52. I ended up with 235 blocks for August, almost half of them for a 9-Patch quilt top that I finished recently.
    https://quiltsandcostumes.blogspot.com/2021/08/volcano-quilt-top-finished.html
    Brunswick Forest looks great!

  53. Marilyn Holder says:

Total for August: 20 blocks. My biggest problem is staying with my sewing because I get interrupted by hubby and it might be two days later when I get back to the sewing machine. Maybe set aside a time each day to sew/quilt would help…working on it.

  54. Barbara B says:

August was productive with 275 blocks.

  55. Shirley B. says:

I made 10 blocks in August.

  56. Shirley B. says:

I made ten blocks for August.

  57. Beverly Hovis says:

I got 65 blocks done this month. Making two 2 1/2 inch scrappy quilts so little pieces take forever!
    Half plus done tho!!!

  58. Delana says:

I made 10 blocks at our annual quilt retreat in August.

  59. Beverly V. says:

I love your quilts. Gave me an idea, if I need to add more to memory quilt. My total for August is zero again. Loaned my machine out to make a baptismal gown, and then the baptism was canceled due to COVID. Hopefully will get to work on quilt later this fall. I can’t wait to finish and then have three more quilts to finish before starting blocks for another quilt.

  60. Debbi says:

August was a pretty good sewing month for me. I made 104 blocks. Much of that is due to finishing my leader ended blocks and counting them. The flimsy is almost together. But I’m feeling the fall pressure too…many things to get done this month before the rains come, and the shorter days. And you reminded me…I need tires too. September will go fast!

  61. Stephanie says:

Sorry to be a bit later reporting in. I had a pretty good sewing month in August, although distracted by some hat knitting. I made a row quilt from squares = 13 blocks, a different row quilt = 15 blocks, plus 45 QAYG string blocks and 35 other pieced blocks. Total of 108 blocks.

  62. Barb Roberts says:

Hi Shelly, Better late than never, I made a whopping 9 blocks in August. Hope you are still healing well, hang in there!! Barb
