Quilting With Friends

Last Saturday, the Hands of Friendship Quilt Guild in Kirksville, MO, of which I am a member, hosted their annual spring retreat.

I’ll start off by saying we had a blast! (Or at least I did.) What a fun day!

Our meals were catered by a group doing fundraising for a mission to Haiti to install bio filters so that Haitian residents can have clean drinking water. They spoiled us rotten with the good food and service!

We also held a canned food drive for the local food pantry that makes meals for people and also sends them home with food they can use later.  Another worthy effort.

The day was chock full of activity. Just look how busy everyone is!Working2

First up was a demo by Alice on using the AccuQuilt GO! cutter to cut fusible applique shapes. She then showed us how to arrange the shapes in a design and applique them down by machine. My first “real” attempt at machine applique, and it wasn’t so bad!

I followed Alice with a demo on making Fast Flying Geese, so that we’d have something to frame our applique blocks with. You can find the online tutorial for that HERE.

Then Rose Marie finished us up with a lesson on how to apply borders without getting your quilt top all out of shape.

Here’s my finished project after working through all the day’s demonstrations:Fripperytop

I used mostly the Frippery collection by Thomas Knauer for Andover Fabrics for my little quilt. It measures 26 inches square.

After the fabulous lunch we were served, we were then treated to THREE separate trunk shows given by members of our guild — we have such talent among our members, it’s incredible. I’ll show you more on those later . . .

One of our members, Meredith, turned 88 years old yesterday, and two of her closest friends surprised her with a birthday cake during the retreat, and we all got to help her celebrate! Meredithetal

She doesn’t look 88, does she? Meredith

And Tammy, from our local quilt shop, Quilted Square, did a workshop on a table runner for those who wanted to do that. Working

A busy busy day, and we were all happy and just stitching like crazy!

I really need a day like this! So much fun! If I look anything like your friend at 88, I’ll be a happy camper. Does quilting keep us younger?
