The 2012 Prairie Moon Ranch Cowboy Christmas Stocking . . .

Prairie Stars

I thought long and hard about the design for this year’s stocking. I didn’t want it to be too complicated. I didn’t want it to be too fancy. I wanted it to work for a cowboy or a cowgirl equally. I wanted it to have some little touch that says Christmas, so I chose stars.

The embroidery is simple. I used backstitch and satin stitch, and there’s nothing complicated about the design. It went really quickly. I didn’t even get all the way through watching Lonesome Dove while working on it!

I also put a lot of thought into the fabric decisions for this stocking. I found this lovely wrinkledy-looking “solid” that I believe is a Marcus Brothers fabric (not sure), and it reminded me of well-worn leather from a pair of boots that are loved and worn every day. That clinched it for me.

I added in the nice dark brown piece from a new Timeless Treasures collection, and this year’s boot finally came together. I hope you like it. And if you’re collecting them annually, I hope you think it’s worthy of adding to your collection.

So . . . the pattern is now listed in my Etsy shop, both in the regular printed version and in a PDF version you can receive by email. I’ve generally done kits for each of the stockings, so you can make yours exactly like the one I made, but I’m not having kits this year, unless the fact that I’m not having them causes such an uproar that I change my mind. I’ll have to keep you posted on that, but for now, no kits.

And in celebration of finally having it ready, of course I’m having a give-away for two copies of the pattern. All you have to do to enter to win is leave a comment on this post. And if you don’t mind, and want to, let me know which of the annual stockings so far is your favorite (you can see them all in my Etsy shop — 2008-2012). I’ll draw for two winners on Friday, September 21.

Wow! that is one stunning boot stocking! I have to say this is my favorite by far, as it is just so real looking and I love stars! Thanks for the chance at another fun drawing!

I like this one a lot, and I really like “Cowboy Kris” too!

I really like the embroidery on 2010, but love the toe detail on 2011. Regardless of the rest of the boot, I like riding heel as opposed to the roping heel. Tough question to answer as they each have wonderful features and of course they can be made to my own preference of fabric colours. They’d be awesome made in ultra suede.

Oh wow Shelly, I love this pattern. I think this is my fav so far. I was wondering where you found the fabric for those boot stockings.

Oh, wow Girl! Amazing stocking this year! I’m stuck! I can’t choose a favorite. Initially I have to say this year’s tops the list because I want a pair just like that, but then I look at the ones I already have and I love them all. Think Santa will mind if I have more than one stocking? Oh! I just thought how perfect these would be for the family we just hired! You pretty much found the perfect fabric – I’ll have to see what I can round up.

  8. I don’t know, Shelly…I love all your stockings! The reason I haven’t purchased one yet is because I can never choose. I really like this one a lot. I think it’s my fave. I want to go get it. I will be buying it to make for my BIL. If you do end up doing kits, I’d really love one! đŸ˜‰ Way to go on this design. Awesome!

Oooo–I really like this new stocking!! I think my most favorite has to be the Rhinestone Cowgirl. I have the patterns for all the rest of the stockings–just still haven’t sat down to work on them—This is a reminder that I should start on them, maybe this Christmas will finally be the one I get some done!

  10. 2012 is my favorite…think I might have to make a couple of these up for Christmas gifts đŸ™‚ 2008 comes in as a definite second favorite too.

  11. Lisa Long says:

I love this years boot..have a similar pair in real life. But, 2009 is my favorite..wish I had a pair of them to put on and strut around in. Really cute! All of them are marvelous!

  15. I’m going to buy this pattern. Do you think you’ll do kits? If not, I’ll get the pattern now. If you will do a kit, I might wait until that’s ready. Thanks.

I like the Prairie Moon Christmas Stocking 2012. I would like to know how long and wide this stocking is, and how roomy inside? Is the heel filled or just a flat piece sewn onto the rest of the boot?

    • prairiemoonquilts says:

      Across the top: 5 1/2″
      Heel to toe: 9 1/4″
      Height: 15″
Once you have the pattern, you can enlarge or reduce it to the size you need, however.
The lining only fills the upright portion of the boot, from top down to the sole, and does not extend into the actual heel portion or into the foot/toe portion.
