News From the Ranch, Episode 1454

It’s Spring!

It arrived early this year.

I hope this doesn’t mean a sweltering hot summer, because I want to be able to get outside!

It’s getting to be riding weather, so My Cowboy made me saddle up a few days ago. I haven’t been wanting to ride as much because I don’t want to take the time away from working, but I know it’s good for me to take breaks, so I did it.

I will say that on this particular day, it was terribly windy, so I didn’t really enjoy myself too much, but still . . . horses. And this view:

This time of year we get lots of mud as things thaw out and we get spring rains, and this is why it takes me as long to get ready to go ride as it does to actually make the ride. Bonnie is always such a mess! And this year, for some reason, her long winter coat has gotten curly — it’s so funny. And this is what she does the minute I turn her loose again!

We have a new girl on the ranch. Her name is Ruby. She’s getting along quite well, after the first day or so of getting to know everyone. She arrived on Leap Day, another present from My Cowboy!

He went to a sale on Saturday, and my parting words were: “Don’t buy any more goats. But I wouldn’t mind having two chickens.”

Here’s what he came home with. Two roosters, and six hens! So now we have chickens, too.

Chickens

When we turned them loose in the hayloft, one of them decided to venture out right away, and flew down into the pasture where the horses are. It was PeeWee’s first time ever seeing a chicken, and he didn’t quite know what to think — the snorting was hilarious!

Meanwhile, the indoor kids are oblivious to anything going on around them for the most part. Patch seems to think it’s funny to sleep with his butt on his sister’s head — just like a little brother!

And when he’s awake, he occasionally likes to watch Cat TV . . .

I sure do miss living on a farm. What a great life. YES! It is a LOT of work, but the benefits are so worth it. We are building a small chicken house. My daughter finally gave in and is letting me have 4. Yeah me. Now with the garden and my chickens life is going to be cool once again.

    Now for the bees?
