MCR Miss Priss

That’s her registered name . . . but we’ve always called her Bonnie.

My trusty steed. We have gone so many miles together, I can’t even begin to count.

She’s been mine for almost 11 years, and she’s carried me through the Badlands without so much as a misstep; we’ve checked and chased cows, fixed fences and gates, picked berries, and enjoyed lots of beautiful scenery and wonderful weather together over the years.

She’s even carried some of my friends lots of miles!

Victoria has even ridden her!

She went with me to live in Nebraska while we lived there, and she has taken care of my colt, PeeWee, like a second mother, especially when PeeWee lost his mother 5 years ago.

She was born on June 8, 1991, in Rich Hill, Missouri, and she’s a great-great-granddaughter of the famous roping horse, Jackie Bee.

She was one temperament, one speed, and perfect for me.

On Wednesday, October 18, Bonnie left this world, and left an empty spot in the pasture, and a gaping shredded hole in my heart.

I’m not fishing for sympathy, and I usually try to keep this a happy place, but I also think it’s only fair to let you know that life isn’t always rosy around here. I also realize that most of you know what it’s like to lose a dearly-loved fur friend, so you’ll understand.

I’m gonna miss her “Bitch-don’t-come-at-me-with-that-saddle” look, and I think she got as dirty as possible sometimes on purpose, just to make it too much effort for me to get her cleaned up to ride!

I’m extremely sad to think that this will never be my view again:

And that I’ve given my last kisses to this lovable fuzzy old snout:

PeeWee has been calling for her, which only breaks my heart even further. In between embarrassingly uncontrollable bouts of incoherent sobbing, I’m trying to quilt as much as possible to keep my mind occupied. I’ve always been so happy that my studio has a view of the horse pasture and the goat pen, so I can always look out and see all my babies while I’m working — but sometimes, it really tears at my heart.

In honor of Bonnie, I hope you will all go give your fur babies an extra dose of love today.

On a brighter note, Ranger just turned six months old, and weighs 40 pounds now! And won’t stand still long enough for me to get any good pictures, but I’ll be back with a Ranger update soon. (He’s growing his winter coat!)

I try to hide my own fur babies’ adventures although I did have them and for the same reasons. I loved looking at this photo memory book of Bonnie. Good job even in the crying bouts. Hope to see you soon and give you a hug.

My mother was tossed from one of those “get that saddle outta here” horses as a young woman, so I could only adore them from afar for years. They are still my favorite 4-legged creatures, even if they don’t fit on my lap. So sorry for the loss of your big fur baby. I hope PeeWee doesn’t grieve long. He can’t quilt for comfort. Thank you for the photo journey.

Horses are so much more than our baby–there is a partnership between a human and a horse that creates a different sort of relationship. Only a person who has experienced it can possibly understand. My sincere condolences.

Aw I am crying for you. This was a beautiful remembering of a horse that was loved. Quilting does help us heal. Sending you thoughts from chill Maine…

  17. There is such a special connection between us and our horses that just cannot be explained to those who never had horses. It provides a calmness to your soul to groom and ride your horse, and feel the bond you have with each other. I am so sorry to hear of Bonnie’s passing, and hope you find comfort in the years ahead from your beautiful memories together.

I know all too well the great grief at the loss of our beloved pets! I wish that they lived as long as us! After each loss I greave deeply; and am not sure that when my last kitty leaves my side that I will be able to have another pet because of this! We love them so much!
I feel your pain and hope that your quilting and reminiscing will ease the pain!

It’s so hard to lose a furry friend of any ilk. I’m sorry for your loss. Praying all your memories are good ones.

  22. I’m so sad for you. Isn’t it amazing how much love an animal can share? Each one has their own personality that makes them one of a kind. I can’t even imagine losing an animal as large and significant as a horse. Not that size matters, but the grief must be even harder with an animal that takes you on so many adventures. I hope that you will enjoy your memories and photos of Bonnie, knowing that she was a lucky gal to have had such a great life with you. Every animal should be so lucky.

May God Bless your spirit with the Spirit of all the animals who thank you for your love.

An old folk song says “the sweetest hello comes after the hardest goodbye.”

    Thinking of you.

Well, crud! I’m woefully behind in catching up with you and I’m SO sorry to read about you losing Bonnie! It sounds like ya’ll made the perfect pair. I know that a good horse is worth their weight in gold and hope that in time, your memories of her will make you smile. That relationship with a horse is magical. Thanks for sharing a little bit of Bonnie with us! Sending you prayers and hugs.
