Linda’s Gravity Quilt

Posted on August 2, 2017 by prairiemoonquilts in Longarm Quilting

I recently finished quilting a Gravity quilt for my friend, Linda. You may have seen this pattern before — it’s by Julie Herman of Jaybird Quilts, and it’s 97″ x 96″ and chock full of glorious color!

This was my first chance to quilt a Gravity quilt, and Linda wants to enter it into some shows, so we agreed on some over-the-top quilting for it. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve seen a few sneak peeks of it as I was working on it, but today I’m here to show you a lot more pictures, so read on!

Linda took a full picture of it for me, since the ones I took didn’t turn out:

But I took lots of close-ups that did turn out, so here are all the individual diamonds, so you can see what I did in each of them:

Here’s a great shot Linda took of how I quilted the background:

And another close-up shot that she took:

And a shot outdoors that she took — it just glows!

I’m especially proud of this section right here — each one of those little diamonds has its own thread color, but the design is continuous across 4 diamonds at a time!

Here’s one more I took that shows some more of the quilting detail, sort of in shadow:

She sent a Pellon cotton batting to put in it, and I used Superior OMNI thread for all the quilting. I used 51 different colors on this quilt! The thread changes nearly did me in, but they were soooo worth it! I really love how the quilt turned out, and I hope Linda has good luck with it in the shows she chooses to enter it into.

Thanks for trusting me with it, Linda! It was a lot of fun to quilt!

As a new-to-me non-computerized longarm owner, I have to ask…did you do all of that freehand? Was it computer designed? I’m still in the stipple and loop-de-loop phase at this point and I’m afraid I’ll never move out of it.

Oh my goodness! This is drop dead gorgeous! It is really fun to see you have fun with this type of quilting! I can’t imagine that many thread changes, but it was worth it. Well done, both of you!

  12. Wow! This is absolutely stunning. With your longer curved and straight lines, do you use a ruler, or just freehand that? If so, what are your favorite LA rulers?

    This is simply amazing!

I to am a longarm quilter. Mine is the HQ16 which they no longer make. It came to my home in 2006 and has made several moves. It still works like a charm.
