Sandra’s Metro Rings Quilt

Posted on October 25, 2016 by prairiemoonquilts in Longarm Quilting, Quilts

I recently had the honor of quilting for my friend, Sandra. She made a Metro Rings quilt for her son and his new wife, as their wedding quilt. It’s made in 30s reproductions fabrics, and it is simply gorgeous!

Sandra made this quilt for their bed, so she made the center portion of the quilt to fit exactly on the queen-sized mattress, then added the spiky border to frame it, and finished it by putting extra wide plain borders to fall down the sides.

She only put the wide borders on three sides of the quilt. The top has a little narrow border — what I call the “whisker guard”. Her construction makes the quilt a perfect fit on their bed:

I wanted to make the quilting in those wide borders look good while hanging down the sides of the bed, so I chose arcs of feathers at the edges in sort of a “reverse scallop” shape, then filled in with straight lines with squiggles in between. The straight line part draws your eye from the spiked border right on down to the scalloped feathers.

Sandra brought it back to show us once she got the binding on, and it’s stunning!

Sandra entered it into our local quilt show, and it took first place.

Here are the details of the quilt:

Size: 100″ x 119″
Fabrics: various 1930’s reproductions and a creamy solid (possibly KONA Snow)
Batting: Quilter’s Dream Poly Select, 1 layer
Thread: Superior OMNI, Natural White
