Studio Organizing, Week 40

Posted on October 3, 2016 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

It’s been well over a month since I posted an organizing task! It’s been well over a month since I did any organizing, too.

Deadlines got the best of me, and time has a way of getting away from me really quickly. How about you?

I’m back today, however, with a new organizing task.

That pile I wrote about in my last organizing post is still there, but only half as large, so I did tackle some of it. My cutting table is still a disaster, and there is lots of fabric that needs to be put away.

So that’s this week’s task for me:

Put away stray fabric

I have leftovers from projects I’ve finished,

fabricpile

. . . new fabric I bought for no particular reason (what is wrong with me?), and fabric I’ve unearthed from other places that needs to be put away, (this pile is under my ironing board!!?! Why is that a good spot for it? I don’t understand myself!)

ironingboardpile

. . . and always always scraps to deal with.

scraps

I’m trying to get back to working on the scrap pile for 30 minutes a day, just to keep them under control, but my main goal for this week is getting the larger pieces put away where they belong. I got my tubs all organized back at the beginning of the year, sorted by color and labeled, but I just make piles of fabric without taking the time to put them away. It’s a real problem.

fabric

This week, I’m forcing myself to put the fabric away! It’ll give me some more of that clear floor space I’ve been coveting, and help clean off my cutting table.

How about you? Is your fabric all under control? Or do you have some stray pieces that need to be dealt with? Did you do any other organizing over the last 6 weeks?

Well, I’m happy to say that I’m a little ahead of the game here, for a change! I took some time the other day to do some organizing before I decided what project I wanted to work on next. Not everything is off my floor, but the pile is much smaller. My working table is pretty tidy. So I’m happy with that. Oh, and buying fabric just because? Yeah, I’m there too! We could have a good time fabric shopping together – haha!

  2. LOL – my fabric seems to always be out of control. I swear it jumps off the shelves and winds up in the weirdest places clamoring a “pick me, pick me” every time I come by it. Yes, it is past time to corral these wayward pieces.

WEll, I did a little of this yesterday, but I can always do some more than what I’ve done.
It’s amazing how messy I am.
I need to add a photo before and after.

I sat on the floor in my quilting “studio”/bedroom and went almost completely through my scrap bin. It was spewing scraps out and I wanted to be able to close it. (so I can stack stuff on top of it, no doubt) I threw away a little bit of stuff. And set aside a pile to begin cutting those cute Farm Girl Vintage blocks – the small ones of course. And threw more in the snowball box. I could make another Kitchen Sink quilt easily – well if you count setting tons of odd blocks together easy!!

Thank you for sharing that you are as over taken with fabric-itis as so many others! I have just got back to sewing room after several months. Now I am working on finishing some simple projects. I am still using the “if it takes less than two minutes…DO IT.” I find this simple mantra gets many things put away, dishes done and less chaos created.

    hurray I can do stray.

I have come to the conclusion that fabric has a mind of it’s own and although I like to think I’m in control and the boss, it’s obvious that I am not. i had 6 piles. Now I only have one. Sounds like progress, but I have a confession. I put them all into one pile. Works for me!

I too have to clean off the cutting table! I did finish one project so that cleared space down to the next two. I have a very small 4×4 basket with some scraps to cut into squares. I still need to work on the piles, where do they come from? (I am also a knitter with to many pattern piles)
I am a newer quilter so I have not accumulated yet, if anyone is cleaning out I would make use of small pieces to cut into 2.5 blocks for Boston common quilt I would like to make, it requires a lot of variety scraps. My local quilt shop use to sell the scraps n a bag, they stopped, bummer.
