Creativity Challenge #18

Posted on May 12, 2016 by prairiemoonquilts in Creativity Challenges

Were you able to think of something you don’t particularly care for to illustrate?

I had no problem coming up with subject matter — the hard part was choosing which one!

In the end, I chose this little guy:

Salamander

This little guy came slithering out from under my bathtub one fine sunny day, and we startled each other so badly, he slithered back under and I never saw him again. I was starting to think he was simply a figment of my imagination, after My Cowboy just scoffed at me for proclaiming we needed a new bathroom STAT when he got home that day!

It’s some sort of salamander, but I just called him a garter snake with legs. Good enough! Creatures like this do not belong inside the house!

I still need to finish filling in my background, but that’s a task for late evening in my easy chair when I’m too tired to do anything else.

And with that, I’m moving on to this week’s challenge:

Work on some hand lettering

The fine art of hand lettering is coming back into vogue these days. With the advent of doing almost everything on a keyboard, I know my own handwriting has suffered, but there’s something about hand writing that still feels good.

This week I plan to try some hand lettering and also just practice my handwriting. I ordered some calligraphy pens, and can’t wait for them to get here so I can try them out!

However, you don’t need special or fancy pens for this challenge — use whatever feels good for you to write with. I’m going to try several different kinds.

If you’d like some inspiration for things to practice writing, there’s a monthly challenge called Rock Your Handwriting, sponsored by BohoBerry, Decade Thirty, Pretty Prints and Paper, and Tiny Ray of Sunshine. All great blogs if you get the chance to visit, by the way. You’ll get sidetracked!

Or for more ideas of what to write, follow the prompts from Analog Stationers Quoted Challenge.

While you’re at it, if you run across any good quotes you really like, keep track of them, because we’re gonna do something with them later on in the challenges!

Have fun with your hand lettering!

I am busier that a one armed paper hanger right now. Between planting good sized fruit trees and blueberry bushes and the garden we have, we are out straight. We also have to build a 4×6 chicken coop and runner for our chicks who are growing so fast.

I am taking the summer off from quilting. I’ve made a lot in the past couple of years and just want to focus on us and our garden and camp and our home.

No crafts of any kind will be done this summer. We just want to enjoy the family.

I am no good at your kind of creativity but guess what I did instead? I went to google and found a picture of this sort of salamander. The only one I saw with a stripe down the back was a Shenandoah Salamander. Does it make you like him more, if you know he and his ancestors co-habited with Daniel Boone and the Native Americans of West Virginia? Oh, I guess not.

  3. Hi Shelly,
Got my hand lettering done and posted to my blog. Have a great day!
