Studio Organizing, Week 15

I’m sure you all got your scraps completely tamed last week, right?

I worked on mine some more, but all the scrap taming has now led to another problem . . .

Some of my bins of pre-cut squares are now so full that the lids will no longer fit!

So I pulled out — get this — nearly 1000 squares from this bin of 4″ squares. Yes, that’s ONE THOUSAND — and the lid still won’t fit. I’ve started 3 new scrap quilts using these 1000 squares, and I’m sure you can see that I could make many, many more just from this one box of squares!

I pulled a bunch of blue and tan ones to make a quilt for the nursing home. I’m just sewing them together in a checkerboard fashion. I have them in four-patches so far. I’ll be finishing it up by the weekend, when our guild is having a charity sew day to make lots of quilts for the nursing home.

So my scrap taming will definitely be an ongoing thing around here. Is it ongoing at your place, too?

This week, I’m cleaning my office and doing a lot of purging. I’ve filled a box with things to give away, and I’m pretty sure my garbage man is gonna wonder what I’ve been up to when he goes by on Friday!

But it feels so much better already, and it leads me to this week’s organizing task:

Clean off a shelf or clean out a drawer

I’m working on getting this bookcase cleaned out and organized. I am close to done with these top three shelves, but there are two more on the bottom that need doing yet, so that’s what I hope to get done this week.

How about you?

Do you have at least one drawer or shelf that could use a good reorganization?

Have a great week!

I wish I could abide by the rule: “handle each piece of paper only once.” At least half of my mess would be non-existent!

I love scrap fabrics. I now have an Accuquilt machine, so my scraps are well under control. I use the scraps as leader/enders. I make two quilts at once this way.

Our recycle bin is full every week. I seem to produce a lot of trash. Yesterday I cleaned the shelf about the toilet in the basement bathroom (a walk out apartment). OY!

    I’m showing no mercy.

  3. That is a BUNCH of scraps! I didn’t get my scraps tamed, but I did manage to find a cute vintage glass jar I’d misplaced and it’s already filled with collected selvages. I have sort of a love/hate relationship with those edges, I save them then discard them, etc, it’s a cycle. They do look sweet in the jar though.

I made a pieced border yesterday that used a piecing technique I have not used before. I made 28 three piece blocks. In doing this I generated 112 cut off scraps that made 28 HST’s and 28 smaller versions of the original 28 blocks. Yikes. No wonder our scrap bins get filled. I now have enough stuff in my scrap bin to make one more complete Kitchen Sink quilt and I am going to make a “zipper” quilt that will use up my dozens of William Morris rectangles left from the Bob’s Your Uncle quilt. See where this is going to end? No? Neither do I.

I am forever taming scraps. As I was working on my scraps, I decided I did not want them to move from where they were. That was not what I had planned, but they are all in their drawers and I need to use them more, but they are under control.
This week I am looking up and doing some shelves that don’t ever get any attention. They are VERY dusty, so that will not be any fun, but it will make me feel better when I do get it done.
