Creativity Challenge #9

Posted on March 3, 2016 by prairiemoonquilts in Creativity Challenges

Did you have fun last week revisiting and continuing work on some of the previous challenges?

I got a little bit more done, but not nearly as much as I would have liked. I finally got my initial made out of barbed wire. My Cowboy had to help me, but he was patient, and I got it! I’ve put them all in a grouping on the wall by my ironing station in my sewing room. It still looks a bit sparse, so I may add some more as time goes on.

Initials

I added to one of my doodles, although technically, I did this on the plane coming home from California. I want to excerpt parts of this for other projects, so it has sparked some new ideas!

I’ve started several junk journals, but not one of them is far enough along to really look interesting yet. I started one for personal things that might have dates attached (for memory-keeping purposes), and then I started one in this book:

It’s for random things that don’t have dates (or even actual subjects) attached to them. Just fun stuff I like looking at for inspiration now and then:

Can you tell I’m not (and have never been) a scrapbooker?

This week’s task is a very simple one, so that you still somewhat have an extra week to do some more catching up, but I DO want you to put some concentration into it:

Read some poetry

This may not sound like a creativity thing, but trust me, it is. It gets your mind working to conjure themes, pictures, and ideas.

And while you’re reading, pick out and mark your favorite passages, because next week, we’e going to do something with that. This is a two-part challenge, I guess you could say.

I’m a lover of the classics. I’m a huge Shakespeare fan. As far as poetry for poetry’s sake, I like Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, and Maya Angelou. As with quilts, I like a little bit of everything!

So choose your favorites, classic or contemporary, and spend some time with them this week. And don’t forget to make notes so you can go back and find your favorite passages. I can hardly wait to see what you will choose as your favorites! And if you end up with any extra time on your hands, you can do some more catching up on previous challenges. That’s what I’ll be doing!

I think I probably have 4 favourites that I can think of right now that I havent read for ages so this will be fun!

    Leonard Cohen
    Rod McKuen
    John Betjeman
    Rydyard Kippling.

Oh and I forgot Bob Dylan of course!

Ooo, perfect! Mine actually came to me yesterday in the form of a song. Whenever I hear this song, I close my eyes and listen to the lyrics and imagine….

THAT’s what I’ll choose to do!

My smash journal isn’t very smashing yet. I’m working on it. Poetry will be fun. Favorites that come to mind — Luci Shaw, Wendell Berry, Langston Hughes and maybe Robert Frost. Hadn’t thought of Bob Dylan — that could be fun!

I like Robert Frost and eecummings and Rudyard Kipling and Longfellow and currently I am following the poetry of a former colleague where I worked, Robert Bates Graber.

When I told my daughter, she started quoting her favorite ones.
What fun to see what we can find.

Hey, thanks for your kind words, Shelly. I do love cramming stuff in my books. 🙂

Poetry is always fun! One of my faves is T.S.Eliot, and I rather like Keats, but i might be searching for some i’ve not yet read too.

I’m excited to see what we’re going to do!

  7. Hi Shelly,
Was wondering if children’s poetry would work for this challenge. I have a favorite one, Shel Silverstein. His children’s poetry is wonderful. My words, doodles, and smash book are all coming along. Haven’t posted anything at my blog, but I will soon. Have a great day!

P.S. you can send me an email about the poetry.
