Studio Organizing, Week 47

Posted on November 19, 2015 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

Wow! Did I ever make the lists last week! I think I filled up half a notebook! Now to get all the ideas sorted and DONE — methinks that part will take awhile . . .

Did you make any more lists? Or just work on a list you already had? Truthfully, working on a list you already have is probably way more productive than just making more lists, but I had some waiting time where I couldn’t do much else, so that’s what I do when I’m stuck somewhere waiting — make more lists — I can’t help myself!

The good news for you in all that is that I have LOTS of new ideas for fun stuff for next year, so stick around — there’s a lot coming your way on the ol’ blog in the coming months!

For now, we have to hunker down for the final few organizing tasks of the year, and this week’s is yet another necessary repeat (at least for me):

Put away stray fabric/organize a fabric bin

I have this box that needs to be sorted and put away:

boxofabric

And this pile:

pileofabric

And in order to get it put away, I’ll be forced to organize a bin, simply so I can get the lid back on it! See how that works?

I’m also wanting to deal with the scraps a little more, cutting some more of them up to put away in my pre-cut bins to get them out of the way.

This is always a very dangerous task for me, because every time I do it, I end up starting a new scrap quilt — sometimes more than one! Does this mean an intervention might be in order? Or does this happen to you, too?

Have you managed to keep your fabric organized from the very start? Or does yours seem to get a little out of control as you work? I’m hoping that by addressing the issue every few weeks I can force myself to keep it from getting as bad as it might get otherwise.

Then again, maybe I just have too much — gasp! Is there any such thing? Surely not!

But if you’ll excuse me, I need to go start another scrap quilt — or two! It’s gotta be used up, right?

Good idea!. I have totally run out of places to put my fabric. Moved some a week or so ago and not can’t fund it. Must do come clearing out, get more storage or clear some out. If I clear out then I miss that fabric immediately. Oh well, I will do something to make more order. The lists were some help but I didn’t get enough lists made.

The dealing with scraps and “trying” to find a place for the material is definitely never ending. And as much as I hate to admit it, I think it has gotten worse since I got the job at the quilt shop. You know, the employee discount along with seeing all the new wonderful fabric coming in. Sigh…

I’m already going through piles of fabric this morning, so this is a timely one.
    I love my lists.

As much as I have tried to keep my sewing room clean, ( notice I said Tried ), It never work for long. I get going and like Eleanor Burns, fabric flies all over my room.

Now it is full of Christmas stuff. We do the Parade of trees and all the gifts including the tree is in my SMALL sewing room.

Plus I just finished a Christmas quilt for the Veterans group we belong to for their raffle. It is 68x 55. IT is very Christmasy.

Now I have to finish the binding on my daughter’s king quilt for Christmas. I only have 2 sides to go.

And my hubby has to finish his quilt for our newest Marine in the family. It will be almost like the other one he made but only twin not queen. Only problem is that his area is full of all the other stuff. SIGH!!!

So that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. LOL!

From our home to you all we wish for you a wonderful Thanksgiving. Count your blessings people. We all could be so much worse. Remember those who cannot and will not have a happy
thanksgiving this year. Remember France and the towers and all those who suffer each day.

Blessings and peace to you all.

I realized today that I stuck at week 45. I have no idea what happened to 46. Well, I can’t undo the past. What shall I do now? I have bought a lot of new fabric and it really needs to be put away neatly……but I’m not sure exactly where I want it. My fabric system is clumsy. I need more shelves. Excuses, excuses. I’ll report next week if I actually get any organizing done. Tonight I have to finish quilting a quilt for my grandson. He comes way before organizing.

  6. Starting scrap quilts might be more productive that what happens when I sort fabric. I end up starting more quilts/bags/wall hangings/pillows and just creating MORE scraps!

  7. Scraps have a very luring and insidious nature because we don’t want to waste our money, or rid ourselves of those pieces left over of fabric we just love. But as Clausen said all these new scrap projects just make more scraps. I’m going to try to handle scraps as I’m starting to handle paper – once or twice at the most. After that there are out of my sewing room. That’s the only way for me.
