Studio Organizing, Week 35

Posted on August 27, 2015 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

How’d you do last week?

I’m making progress, however slowly. I only have one more shelf of the closet to clean off. I need to decide what I’m going to do with the things that are there, and I didn’t have time to deal with those types of decisions this week. I was running the longarm.

One of the things on that shelf is a pile of little quilts — banners, table runners, table mats, wall hangings — and they need to live elsewhere.

So that leads me to this week’s task:

Organize your finished quilts

Or at least some of them. I have too many to try to handle them all at once, but I could choose one storage location and work on it — like the pile in the closet, for instance.

I like to get my quilts out and air them out and refold them every so often. I haven’t done it in awhile, so this week seems good. I’ll be working on getting at least one pile of my finished quilts in order.

How about you?

How do you store your finished quilts?

Is it time to change out the ones you’re decorating with? Take down summer and put up fall? Fluff and refold some of your favorites?

I’m feeling it..the need to change the displays from summer to fall. These cool mornings just feel like September. I sandwiched two quilts yesterday for quilting, but will need to rest between sessions, so will change those quilts on display. Thanks for the inspiration.

Are you peeking into my house? I have a nice open space for my Avante now but still have to deal with all the little piles that popped up as a result.

Coincidentally I pulled out a bunch of my finished quilts a couple weeks ago. I need to retold and decide where they are going to live.

Thanks for the challenges! They are really helping me focus and get things done.

Hmm, when I first read your post about the quilts in the closet and how you like to air them out and refold them, I thought you were referring to UN-finished quilts. (Yes, I have several) Right now my UN-finished quilt tops are in a Rubbermaid tub. I think I will take them out and hang them in my rolling clothes closet–one of those 2’x3’x5’tall zippered canvas closets on wheels. At least I can look at them and maybe pair the backing with them and get motivated to FINISH them.

So, I’m not really doing what you ask–regarding FINISHED quilts–but rather a spin-off on the UN-finished tops.

Bonus: that will free up a tub for more selvage storage!

Hmmm….. I guess what my husband says is true. I should make more quilts for us. We have several all on beds or the couch. Most of the quilts I make are given to family members. I do have a tote that has 3 or 4 completed quilts in it – I guess I will find a home for them.

I did work on last weeks project but sadly I just moved piles from one place to another. I will try to work on this some more this week also.

After moving and giving away as many finished quilts as I could give up without crying, I have two really deep piles of finished quilts on the sewing and bedroom floors. I saw a storage shelf thing at Walmart that might work to at least get them up off the floor. Now I must find time to go to Walmart and see if they still have them in stock after college getting back in session. Students tend to buy out this kind of stuff. (my excuse if I don’t get this done)

I do have my total 6 ft by 6ft cutting table clear except for the quilt that needs have the excess fabric cut to be ready to sew on binding. NOW where to put all the stuff I took off the table? Just seem to move piles from one place to another far too often. Really need to have time to do a lot of projects and NOT buy any more fabric. Is that possible?

I have been looking at my pile and will tackle it this week.

Last week I did get my books all on my shelf, so I feel good about that.

  8. Mine are stored on a bed in the guest room and the smaller ones in an old filing cabinet rolled as burritos. One chore I”m actually on top of.
