Studio Organizing, Week 34

Ten things — did you get ’em done?

I will readily admit: I did not.

I tried, but just couldn’t find time to get to all of these things. I’m working on some very special projects and urgent deadlines this week. Right now, there’s no light at the end of my tunnel until November, and what do you bet by then, I’ll have a whole ‘nother set of special projects and urgent deadlines to be working on?

That’s how it goes around here, which is why it’s doubly difficult for me to get and stay organized.

My office closet is slowly coming together (I did work on it some more). The piles on my cutting table aren’t quite as high (I put a few things away, and finished some more things). I even ditched a UFO I decided I was never going to finish — I threw some parts of it away, and put the good parts back into my stash for something else later on. That felt good!

My Cowboy got my shelves fixed, and I got them cleaned off and reorganized. He also put an extra shelf up in the office closet for me, which gives me more storage in there for things I previously had stacked around.

Officeshelves

I also made curtains for my sewing room, when I ran across the fabric for them while I was putting fabric away. I now believe it is completely impossible to NOT start a new project when you’re playing with all your fabric piles and bins. The Squirrel Syndrome is simply too strong!

What this attempt DID show me is that there are several things that could be expanded on as their own little project, which leads me to this week’s task:

Choose one thing you’ve discovered needs more work, and work on it

In the ten things you worked on last week, was any one of them more involved than you first imagined it might be?

Did you unearth something that needs to be worked on that’s been nagging at the corner of your mind because it’s unfinished?

Did you discover something while cleaning up that just needs a bit more work to be called done?

This is our week to work on that thing, and possibly get it off our plate once and for all.

I think I’m going to choose my office closet. It’s been in the process of getting reorganized for most of this summer, and I work on it for 5 or 10 minutes, then get distracted and I’m on to something else.

With my new shelf now added, I can no longer use that as my excuse for not finishing up in there. Plus, if I would just put everything away in there like I want to, it will clear up a LOT of space in other areas. I call that a win-win!

How about you?

What one thing do you need to keep forging ahead on?

I’d love to hear what you’re working on this week.

I am tackling my long arm area which impacts the majority of my public living area and will continue to do so this week. Delivery is 1 week from Saturday!

I did some cleaning and also hung a basket by my longarm to put my quilt tops in while waiting to be quilted. This might be a bad idea as I use to have a basket but then I didn’t quilt them – out of sight out of mind. Well this is still in sight so hopefully will help – unfortunately it is already full.

I did not get my table cleaned so I will continue to work on it.

Well I am organizing. I did all the food cupboards today. It needed it. Now I just have to haul what I tossed and clean the kitchen and dining room and that’s done until spring.

Now I am starting tomorrow to turn my sewing room into a couples sewing room. My hubby is now doing quilts. He’s not bad at it either. He certainly knows how to rip out. I am ordering a new sewing machine the beginning of September. A really good one. With a large throat. Will tell you how I like it after I use it for a while.

I also took before pictures of my sewing room and I will take after photos also.

Oh and one other thing. I cleaned up camp and moved most of everything back to the house yesterday. I am facing cataract surgery soon so I wanted to get that done.

So this week has been very busy. I also started college classes last night. Every Wednesday night from 6-9. Lots of homework everyday also. So my time is all used up until December. PHEW!!

  4. This one was easy. At Tuesday night’s guild meeting, they issued a challenge for us to make 4 blocks from the decade I was born in. Well, it turns out that the WIP I’m working on is from that era. I now have three months in which to finish it. So I’ll be working on it every day even if it’s just a few minutes to meet that goal.

I admire your honesty. With all my stuff and piles I feel it’s it’s two steps forward and one giant sept back so pehaps there’s some progress. I spend too much time worrying about all the stuff I’m not getting done and then feel guilty when I do something that’s good for my well being like sewing. Another logger mentioned a book called, “Eat that Frog” by Brian Tracy. It’s a small, thin book but I haven’t gotten past eating the frog which basically means if there is something I need to do, I need to put my blinders on and do it. Not wait until later so I can worry about not doing it all day. Just eat the frog. It sounds so easy but For me it’s so hard. So tomorrow I will get up and eat the frog and then anything else I do will be done without worrying. For your question, I’ll answer that I will do my best to start and finish quilting a quilt (1 of 2) which must be done by Sept. 5th.

The room I sew in is relatively neat…..but there are a bin and a box of old fabric, scraps and blocks that I can’t find a place to put. Just when I thought I would throw the box of old fabric away, I found two pieces for backing for a couple of table runners. BUT guess where the pieced table runners came from? From my friend who was going to throw them away because she is organizing!! I took them home with me and made two table runners. Only one is actually finished. Like a bird………..see a bright shiny object and take it home to the nest.

Shiny objects all around!! Oh goodness, it is so hard to stay focused.

After being away at the most wonderful retreat last weekend, I decided to put my things away. As I was cleaning, my eyes fell on a large stack of beautiful fabric that has been sitting out for a really long time. That fabric didn’t “make the cut” for the project I have underway, but did I stop and put them away? Nope.

Then I discovered there were other neatly stacked piles behind them. Soooooo, it is time to find a permanent home for them in my fabric cabinet/closet. They are certainly more important than some of the fabrics that are in there now.

That will be my challenge this week.

Thanks for the encouragement to always do better!

I did some things, but it has been another crazy week. My whole body says to stop. something is better than nothing, and without your challenge, I would have accomplished nothing.

I am going to focus on putting my quilting books on the shelf this week.

  9. I can relate. I no sooner get one or two priority projects finished, and there are two more that have to get done right now. I’m getting ready to quilt a quilt for my brother…it’s my top priority. Re: organization, I’ve been doing pretty well keeping things neat in the sewing room…except for my cutting table which is an ongoing quest.
