A Special Weekend

Posted on July 16, 2015 by prairiemoonquilts in Travels

With some very special friends.

Every summer, I get together with a group of very special ladies at Gruber’s Quilt Shop’s Retreat Center in Waite Park, Minnesota.

Last weekend was our retreat for this year, and it was so much fun. I always come home completely exhausted, but it’s so worth it!

There’s always lots of sewing, lots of talking, and lots of laughing at our retreat.

The group always exchanges “Happies”, little handmade gifts we give each other. We had quite a haul this year! I stole Amanda Jean’s picture, since I didn’t take one of all mine together:

We got all kinds of goodies — fabric, coasters, pincushions, baskets, totes, candy, patterns, and even a coffee mug with our Sew Sisters Quilting Bee logo on it. Stephanie also made us each a cute little tote with our Bee logo on it as well. Can you guess which one is mine?

And I got an extra Happy from Amanda Jean — some cowboy fabric!

We also go out at least one night as a group to a nice dinner. Here’s our group this year:

From left to right is: Amanda Jean, René, Doris, Mary, Michelle, Terri, Cindy, me, and Stephanie. I love these gals!

I’ll show you the Happies I made for them, and some of what I was working on at the retreat in some later posts, so stay tuned!

And you know I’m not ending this post without letting you all in on some of the fantastic quotes that came from this weekend — it just wouldn’t be me, if I didn’t collect all the funny stuff to share with you — so here you are — Enjoy!

“I’m RE-creative.”

“I’m the one who has to pull out my iPad just to wind a bobbin.”

“Aw. I made one of those and gave it to a friend. Why did I do that?”

“Her favorite color is Anna Maria.”

“Why do you guys keep letting me come to this?”

“Are you ready for some poor humor? I’m gonna cut the cheese.”

“I’m teachin’ you a lesson here.”

“I do it the wasteful way.”
“Me, too. I figure it’s a good way to use up fabric.”

“Thank you for caring enough to give me a hard time.”

“I can be trusted.”

“Every quilt needs a little bit of ugly.”

“I either need to go shopping, or I’m gonna sew. What’s it gonna be?”

“It’s expensive to learn lessons. I’d rather buy experience.”

“That’s my Active Bitch Face.”

“Please . . . Take me to the mental place.”

“I thought I was an old maid at 22.”

“I was so shocked, I didn’t even pull out my phone!”

“I think I sassed a little bit.”

“Obviously, your day job is getting in the way of your Instagramming.”

“Note to self: Bring ugly quilt next time.”

“I can bind AND tell you what to do at the same time.”

It is so obvious that you and your quilting pals thoroughly enjoy this weekend every year. How you all must relish the memories and relive the highlights. I’m still chuckling over the snippets of conversation you captured – a sure sign of a good time. And,oh yes, there was probably even some quilting accomplished! This is the best kind of weekend. Thanks for sharing!
