Studio Organizing, Week 27

Posted on July 2, 2015 by prairiemoonquilts in Studio Organizing Challenge

Last week’s task was a good one for me. I’m an expert list maker — it was right up my alley!

And boy, did I make lists!

I went through all my current lists and got them all updated. I made a new list of things I need and want to get done during July. And I got my Finished Quilts and UFO lists updated.

I feel like I’m getting a fresh start for the second half of the year.

I knew it had been awhile, but apparently, it’s been even longer than I thought since I updated my lists. My Finished Quilts list is at 309. Over half of those have been made for someone else, sold, or given away over the years. Whew! Where in my house would I store over 300 quilts? I still think I need to get rid of some more . . .

My UFOs list? Well . . . it grew . . . and I’m not sure I’ve found them all yet. Right now it stands at 91 (cringe) — but to my credit, 20 of those are simply waiting to be quilted. That helps a little, but not much. And I’m not done organizing, so that number may yet grow. I have some work to do . . .

Which leads me to this week’s task:

Organize your UFOs

If you don’t have too many, this will be easy, but if you’re like me, you won’t even get all done with this in just one week!

I try to keep my UFOs in tubs, but I’m here to tell you — I don’t even own 91 tubs, so when the tubs are all full, I resort to boxes, sacks, drawers, and piles. Some piles probably have pieces for more than one UFO all mixed together in them — that’s not a good thing. I’m not real proud of that fact!

It’s my ultimate goal to get down to a respectable number of easily stored tubs — say, no more than 20 tops — 10 or 15 would be even better. Even better than that would be to only have that many UFOs or less! Ah, such a wonderful dream.

Like I said, I have work to do. And I’m beginning this week.

How about you?

Are your UFOs getting out of control? Or do you already have them all neatly stored and labelled?

Can you pick up a UFO and work on it without any issues?

Or does it need something in order for you to finish it?

Is it missing parts and pieces?

Now is the time to go through them and decide what needs done to either get rid of them, finish them, or re-think what you want to do with them (make it smaller? change the borders? different setting? anything to move it along).

I hope to finish at least 4 of mine this week. I’ll let you know how that goes. Let me know what you’re working on!

I did my lists from last week. I love lists, so this was an easy one.
The UFOs are numerous and I do not like to put everything in the bag because I normally change my mind. I have them as they are in individual bags or boxes (depending on the size) and when I pull them out to work on them, I will work on finding anything else that I might need.
I have my 162 organized in two spots. 4 of those are ready to quilt. 10 are awaiting their time in the challenges I’m participating in.

Well, I did get my lists updated:
book list, UFO list, finished project list, list of kits not started, list of tools, and my “Take pictures of these quilts for the book” list).

Ok, I was in the middle of listing my “list of lists” and was “making it pretty” when I hit submit instead!

Guess I’ll live with the punctuation errors above.

What I was going to say was, “since my UFOs are in order I’ll work on finding and printing all of the pictures of quilts/projects I’ve recently finished and put them in my book”. That should bring everything up to date. I don’t have that many to print, maybe 10.

I keep a photo album of the quilts I’ve finished, the quilts “in-progress”, and any kits/patterns that I’ve purchased. It makes me happy to look through it and see how far I’ve come.

      Have a great holiday weekend!

I updated my sewing list – whew it is long. I have a few projects that could be finished I will work on organizing them this week – who knows I might even complete one.

  4. I won’t be able to do our task this week or even attempt it – DGD is here. But I’ll answer the questions. 1. The number of UFOs are what are getting out of control. I start too many. 2. Most I can pick up and start right up on them, but some are in disarray. 3. Too many are missing pieces because I”ve appropriated the fabric for another project.

    Hoping it isn’t hopeless.

I, too, am good at making lists but not so good at using them. Like when I make a long grocery list and go to the store without taking it. However—–I made three lists. One of UFO’S, had ten—-until I remembered two others. Yikes twelve UFO’S??????? Also made a list of all the little chores that need to get done around the house. UGG Oh well at least I have those pretty lists. LOL
