Friendly Monsters

Here’s one of the quilts I had the pleasure of quilting for a client recently. Tom sent me his Monsters quilt top for quilting, and look at this!

Isn’t this the most adorable quilt? I just love it. The monsters are all so cute!MonsterQuilt

It has an embroidered poem around the edge, and the piecing is all so fun.

I also love every single fabric in this quilt — what a great collection of bright and happy prints — it was so fun to quilt it.

I even like the backing he chose:Backing

I filled the background around each monster with large pebbles, some of them with swirls in the middle.

I did loops in the sashing strips.MonsterQuilt2

Let me just say right now that Tom’s applique is fabulously wonderful — perfect invisible stitches, smooth edges, absolutely gorgeous work! I was afraid that my quilting would ruin all that.

I didn’t want to leave the monsters with large unquilted areas, so I opted for giving them “clothes” to fill in some of the large places. I gave this cute little pink thing a tutu, and gave the little orange guy next to her a tank top:Pinkmonster

I quilted the red one’s belly, and gave the blue boy a shirt:RedMonster

And this fellow got some jeans:PurpleMonster

I quilted diamonds across the embroidery, so as not to take away from the look of it, yet still hold it down.

Tom was kind enough to provide us with the pattern information, too. If you have any kids in your life, they’re gonna want this quilt. We have 6 nephews, and every single one of them would love this!

The pattern is a Block-of-the-Month set designed by Sue Garman, called “Monsters!”, and you can get it HERE.

Be prepared to get lost in Sue’s pattern store — she has LOTS of fabulous patterns. I myself have always wanted to do her Ladies of the Sea quilt, but good grief! — when would I ever find the time?

Tom’s wife also sent me a gorgeous quilt top to quilt — I’ll be back to show you hers later on. Thanks, Tom, for letting me quilt for you!

I’ve always loved this quilt and the applique, the fabric choices AND your quilting are wonderful. I especially like the circles you quilted in the background of the blocks– it echoes the backing fabric.

Sue has a blog where at the beginning of every month she posts loads and loads of pictures.
