2013 Final Countdown Task One

Posted on December 29, 2013 by prairiemoonquilts in The Final Countdown

Here we go . . . Are you ready?

Task One of the 2013 Final Countdown!

And it is:

Pick the one project of yours that is the closest to being finished and work on it.

This could be just whipping down the binding on a quilt, or putting the binding on a quilt. It could be stuffing a pillow, putting a label on a quilt, adding the tie strings to an apron, framing a stitchery piece, or even preparing a backing for a top that you’re sending off to your machine quilter.

Whatever your project is, just spend some time working on it.

If you happen to get it finished, you’ll be headed into 2014 with one less UFO. If you don’t get it completely finished, at least you’ll be closer to done than you were yesterday.

My project closest to being done is a baby quilt that has only needed its binding for about a month now. I intend to get that binding put on. And then I’ll show it to you . . .

So . . . drag out that oh-so-close-to-being-finished project and work on getting it finished and off your plate so you can move on to new projects in the coming year. Then come leave your comments here and let me know what you worked on and how you did! And I’ll be back tomorrow with Task Two!

I don’t have anything nearly finished as I have been finishing up what I’ve started because they were gifts. However I am in the midst of the OMG! quilt & I work on it when I am between clues in the Bonnie Hunter Mystery. We got clue #5 Friday morning & I finished that step yesterday. Today, I’m back to OMG!

I did the first challenge, Shelly. You can find my blog post on it here: http://fortheloveofneedleandthread.blogspot.ca/2013/12/2013-final-countdown.html

My closest finish is a scrappy mini bowtie block quilt. Today I took out the 110 four patch blocks, arranged, rearranged, and finally labeled and stacked the blocks so I can sew them into rows as leaders and enders. I’ve been making those 3.5″ bowtie blocks for over two years with scraps. It is exciting to see it come together.

I had a baby quilt that just needed to be sandwiched and quilted, which I did today. Of course, I also managed to “quilt” my finger and finger nail. So the binding will wait until tomorrow.

I’ve pulled out the Frog quilt which just needed the face appliqued so I could quilt it. I’m happy to report that tonight I plan to put the binding, hanging sleeve and label on it to call it DONE.

My closest finish is a lap quilt for some friends of my husband who lost their home in Hurricane Sandy. I had the top done but had moved on to other things with a higher priority. So I pulled it out, measured it (48×64) found the fabric I intended to use for a backing, measured IT (110 inches) and figured out how to turn it into a backing. I will drop it off at the longarmer’s when I pick up the quilt she’s working on now …

  11. Vicki says:

Don’t know if this counts or not
I taught my son and girlfriend to make serviettes over the weekend they had the fabric and I showed them how to hem not serge the edges
They did a bang up job not perfect but pretty darn good for a first try all 8 finished today

I completed November & December Block of the Month – I got behind working on CHristmas gifts. Now I need to put my top together and finish my quilt.

  13. Kathy says:

I did get a blanket done. It’s for the Dempsey Cancer center. Guess I know what I needed to do. Thanks for the info.

  14. Cathy Poyner says:

I am working on putting the final border on a Twister quilt. I am mitering the borders for the first time ever. I am watching a YouTube video on how to do it. Hope it works!

  15. Kitty says:

I’m running true to form, behind schedule and still working on task 1 on January 1st! But, I have made progress by finishing the first major section of a quilt top that was a 2013 block of the week. (Over halfway done, two smaller ections left, then sashing and borders.) So I am making progress!

  16. Barbara Dearing says:

I finished a quilt by finally putting on the binding. I think I should sit down and figure out how many I actually finished this year! I will ignore all the ones I started and haven’t finished!

  17. Rose Marie says:

Well, I started this before I knew it was going to count for the final countdown challenge. I pulled out a Barb Adams and Alma Allen applique Home Sweet Home quilt whose blocks I finished ages ago. It is only needing a swag appliqued border. I finished border #1. Only three borders left to do. But I have all the swags cut out and the rest will get done really soon. Glad I was thinking like you, Shelly!!

  18. Deanna says:

A little cross stitch is now a finished pincushion and set aside for a gift—NEXT CHRISTMAS! Wow! I am really on top of things.

  19. Barb Bevell says:

Even though I haven’t been able to post anything until today, I have been doing your challenges as you have posted them.

For the first challenge, I did choose to do something toward the completion of a project, however, it’s not exactly what you suggested. I know I should have been sewing or working toward finishing something on my “to-do” list, but I was motivated to start the 2014 Block of the Month by Janet Stone for The Quilt Show instead. I had already purchased the kit, so I washed and dried the fabric, and printed off the instructions. I’m happy with my progress!

    Thanks for the motivation, Shelly!
